The Bunnings NPC features New Zealand’s best provincial rugby teams. This annual competition is typically held in autumn, when 14 sides compete to win the title. Teams are split into two conferences, one odd and one even, and each side plays 10 games in a round-robin format. The top eight sides then advance to the play-offs and the winner is the team that wins the grand final.

As in other professional rugby union tournaments, the Bunnings NPC uses the standard points-scoring system, which works as follows: four points are awarded to a winning team and two points are awarded to each team following a draw. Additionally, teams receive one bonus point for scoring at least four tries and one bonus point for losing a match by seven points or less.
