Rod Macqueen Bio
Rod Macqueen is a former Australian rugby union coach who was one of the game’s great tactical minds. During his distinguished career, he enjoyed spells at the Waratahs, the Brumbies and the Rebels, as well as four years as the coach of the Wallabies. Rod McQueen was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Rod Macqueen rose to prominence in 1991, when he joined the Waratahs. In 1992, he also became a selector with Australia. From here, he held several roles within the Australian setup, including coaching the Australian XV in 1995 and again acting as a selector in the 1994-95 season.
When Super Rugby was formed, Rod Macqueen joined the Brumbies as the side’s head coach. However, he did not stay in the role for long because he was appointed as the head coach of Australia in 1997.
During his tenure, the Wallabies became a force on the world stage. In 1999, they became the first side in history to capture the Rugby World Cup twice. The year after, they won the Tri Nations for the first time in their history.
In 2001, Rod Macqueen retired from the game after guiding the Wallabies to a 2-1 victory over a much fancied British and Irish Lions side. When he finished his career as the head coach of the Wallabies, he had a win percentage of 81%.
After he finished as Wallabies coach, Rod Macqueen sat on the IRB Rugby Committee between 2005 and 2009. He then briefly came out of retirement in 2010, when he took charge of the newly formed Melbourne Rebels. However, he left after only one season in the role.
