Eben Etzebeth vers la retraite anticipée ?

Victime d’une commotion cérébrale avec les Sharks lors du match de Champions Cup contre Exeter le 7 décembre dernier, Eben Etzebeth n’est pas réapparu sur les terrains depuis.

Généralement, la durée de repos à la suite d’une commotion est de trois semaines mais deux mois après, le deuxième ligne sud-africain n’a pas encore été déclaré apte au service par le staff des Sharks.

Le double champion du monde et Springbok le plus capé de l’histoire (131 sélections à ce jour) ressent à nouveau des symptômes consécutifs au choc et n’a pas été en mesure de passer l’évaluation obligatoire relatif aux traumatismes crâniens (Head Injury Assessment, HIA).

« Il souffre à nouveau des symptômes liés à sa récente commotion cérébrale », a confirmé le club sur son site Internet. « Les Sharks prennent cette blessure au sérieux et le bien-être des joueurs reste notre priorité. Eben est pris en charge par des spécialistes des commotions cérébrales. Il sera autorisé à revenir une fois qu’ils seront convaincus que sa blessure est complètement résorbée. »

Il est un peu tôt pour envoyer Etzebeth, 33 ans, à la retraite. Mais l’ancien Toulonnais, qui ne s’est jamais économisé sur les terrains, est sur la corde raide avec cette rechute qui pourrait bien le priver de son dernier rêve : remporter une troisième Coupe du Monde consécutive avec les Springboks, en 2027. Un exploit jamais réalisé par aucune nation.
