Emmanuel Meafou, deuxième-ligne de Toulouse (145 kg), a franchi une nouvelle étape vers l’équipe de France en obtenant officiellement la nationalité française jeudi 9 novembre 2023.

Le joueur de 25 ans a été naturalisé français à l’hôtel de ville de Toulouse, ce qui signifie qu’il pourrait être en position d’être sélectionné par Fabien Galthié et représenter la France lors du Tournoi des Six Nations 2024.

Meafou, lui-même JIFF (Joueur Issu de la Filière Formation), a déjà été appelé en équipe de France lors du Tournoi des Six Nations en début d’année. Il y avait même un espoir de le voir participer à la Coupe du monde cette année, la France ayant tenté de suivre la même voie que les All Blacks avec Folau Fakatava pour qu’il soit capé après une période de résidence de trois ans seulement au lieu de cinq. Cette tentative n’a toutefois pas abouti.

Né en Nouvelle-Zélande et élevé en Australie

Le deuxième-ligne d’un mètre quatre-vingt-dix a emprunté un chemin tortueux pour représenter potentiellement la France, étant né en Nouvelle-Zélande de parents samoans et ayant grandi en Australie. Il est arrivé en France fin 2018 après une tentative ratée de percer en NFL, où il a atteint les 160 kg.

Meafou a souvent exprimé son désir de représenter la France depuis qu’il a explosé sur la scène l’année dernière. Lors d’un entretien avec le podcast Le French Rugby en 2022, il déclarait : « Je veux jouer pour la France.

« La France est clairement dans ma ligne de mire. Il y a eu quelques discussions à ce sujet et j’ai travaillé pour obtenir mon passeport, mais je veux jouer au plus haut niveau.

« Cela fait maintenant plus de trois ans que je suis ici, alors j’aimerais vraiment jouer pour la France. En attendant, je veux jouer du bon rugby pour Toulouse et voir à partir de là. »

Uini Atonio et Romain Taofifenua ayant tous deux pris leur retraite internationale après l’élimination de la France en quarts de finale de la Coupe du Monde de Rugby, Fabien Galthié perdra 282 kg dans son pack. Meafou pourrait donc contribuer à combler ce vide.

I was excited about the Razor error, but a few things are bothering me about this team. It’s looking less like a bright new dawn, and more like a conservative look to the past. We’ll never know how much pressure comes from above to select established players, but imagine if Razor wiped the slate clean and created the new baby blacks, the financial hit to NZR would be huge. Not that such drastic measures are needed, but a few selections still puzzle. TJ and Christie. Neither look like bright picks for the future, both are experienced but with limitations. I understand why you would pick one as a safe pair of hands, but why both? Jacobson is no impact player, and it makes no sense to me why you would pick both Blackadder and Jacobson in the same squad. They cover pretty much the same positions, and Jacobson has never demanded a start. Blackadder has struggled to stay on the field, but if he is picked, play him. Let’s see what he can do, we know enough about Jacobson, and Blackadder has far more mongrel. I would have preferred to see Lakai in the squad, he offers a point of difference and the energy of youth. Plus he would have kept Papali’i honest and created tasty competition for the 7 jersey. Ioane. The experiment goes on. The bloke is a fantastic winger but still fails to convince as a centre. Has NZR invested so much money in him that there’s pressure to play him? Proctor was by far the better player all season and played next to Barrett. Play him; a specialised centre, in form. Crazy I know. Our two wingers are very good, but we still miss a power runner in the backline. Faiga’anuki was a big loss and could have filled that role at wing or 13. More money on young players like him and less on aging stars would not go amiss in NZ rugby. Perofeta had a decent game, but the jury is still out. The lack of a specialist fullback in the squad is another head scratcher. Admittedly it’s early days and a win is a win, but hopefully some more innovation is in the plan otherwise I see this squad struggling sooner or later.

Considering this is the worst performance we’re likely to see from this “new” All Blacks side at the start of the Razor era - and the English should rightfully be kicking themselves for not taking their opportunities despite being better/more polished in most aspects of the game - I think England are going to have to work really hard mentally to get up for the next game. England has a tendency to play worse after a good outing or big game. To come so agonizingly close to an historic win against a rusty AB side will take some work to get over. Gonna have to work on that Jamie George! And the ABs will be much better next week! A few wake up calls today too. I thought they’d be much better than they were today. But there’s only up from here.

Pretty much went as expected. England's blitz defence kept NZ in their box for the most part and put DMac under a lot more pressure than he's used to. Sadly England's attack was very poor and much worse than it was in the 6N. We went back to kicking away too much ball inside the opposition half and didn't build any phases. The ABs were the better side but I think England have got a lot more room for improvement, especially ball in hand. If England can get a bit more fluency in attack, they've got a great chance at Eden Park. Also not sour grapes because NZ honestly deserved to win but that penalty which ended the game was an awful decision. Furbank couldn't release the ball because 2 of the NZ forwards had piled in round the side of the ruck and off their feet.

This is a massive win. With an untested, unknown, first hitout squad, with 10 days prep, we beat a formidable team in its 7th test match together. And we made errors galore, an easy penalty kick timed out at 78mins when up by only 1pt, conceding a penalty 43mins in extra HT phase, instead of kicking ball dead for a HT lead, a lineout throw baulk hot on attack in the last 10mins, it goes on . . . Well done ABs. I expect Razor will fashion a 300% improvement at Eden Park.

We're really short on decent half -backs with AC gone. TJ did good work until he was injured in an unlucky pile up of bodies, but Thinly Crispy isn't up to the job, a 2 works be generous. I can honestly say this is the worst performance I've ever seen from someone in the black jersey - I've never felt compelled to criticise a player, as everyone can have an off night, but that was just awful. He blew it off the back of the scrum, messed up at the ruck, and missed tackles and that was all just in the first 5 minutes of the second half. His delivery is wanting too. Too slow and someone needs to tell him he doesn't need to pull his arms back before he passes, just pass! He's a liability to his team mates who were having to constantly cover ground to fill the holes he left in defence. Their hard work covered for him most of the time, but you shouldn't be in a black jersey if you need that much cover.

Loved it. FurBallsOfSteele was great at fullback, massive from CCS, very impressed by that young English prop off the bench getting his first cap. Sux for TJ doing his knee again, but enjoyed watching Sevu Reece and Telea and their work rate. Perofeta had some fantastic moments so real stoked for him, especially as his selection was so criticised. (Well, it was by me. I wouldn’t have picked him to begin with.)

I think it was Taylor who knocked on from that 1st lineout move. Also, the starting props are rated too low, both at least 7s. Annd . . . Aumua nailed his 1st throw, but his next one he got pinged for baulking (did you actually watch the game btw?). Good teams find a way to win. Excellent data available now for Razor to see exactly where this squad is at. Up to now, it was a huge unknown. So many work ons, add in a coupla three idiotic clangers, some players underperformed, etc etc, we will get better, onwards & upwards for the ABs. England should be very afraid for next week.
