Le grand gallois Alun Wyn Jones a fait ses adieux au rugby professionnel en mode victorieux après que Toulon a arraché une victoire en fin de match contre Clermont (30-27) samedi 18 novembre 2023.

Juste avant le coup d’envoi, au moment du toss, les Clermontois avaient remis, par l’intermédiaire de leur capitaine, Etienne Falgoux un maillot en hommage à la carrière phénoménale du géant gallois pour son dernier match de rugby.

Jones, le joueur le plus capé de l’histoire du rugby international (158 sélections avec le Pays de Galles et 13  avec les British & Irish Lions), a été ovationné par le public français du Stade Marcel Michelin au moment où il a été remplacé sur le terrain.

C’est un Jones ému qui a applaudi le public avant d’embrasser son entraîneur Pierre Mignoni en rejoignant le banc des remplaçants.

Une fin de match à suspens

La performance clinique du demi d’ouverture australien Noah Lolesio, dont c’était également la dernière apparition sous le maillot toulonnais en raison d’une blessure, a permis à Jones de sortir vainqueur après avoir passé 100% de ses tirs au but.

La rencontre a changé de tête six fois avant que l’international fidjien Jiuta Wainiqolo n’inscrive un essai à trois minutes de la fin sur un coup de pied croisé de Baptiste Serin. La transformation de Lolesio a permis de porter le score à 30-27.

Jones avait rejoint Toulon dans le cadre d’un contrat joker pour la Coupe du Monde de Rugby, bien qu’il n’ait pas été sélectionné lors de la campagne du Pays de Galles pour la Coupe du Monde de Rugby.

L’ancien capitaine gallois a terminé sa carrière marquée par cinq Tournois des Six Nations (2008, 2012, 2013, 2019 et 2021), remportant le titre de joueur des Six Nations de l’année après le titre du Grand Chelem 2019.

Il a aussi participé à quatre campagnes de la Coupe du Monde de Rugby (2007, 2011, 2015, 2019) et à quatre tournées des British and Irish Lions, mais une blessure a empêché le deuxième-ligne de se rendre en Afrique du Sud en 2021 malgré sa nomination en tant que capitaine de la tournée.
