History of the United Rugby Championship

The history of the United Rugby Championship can be traced back to 1999, when the Welsh-Scottish League was formed. Three seasons later and the tournament expanded for the first time. Teams from Ireland joined the competition and it became known as the Celtic League.

At the start of the 2010-11 season, the competition expanded once more and two Italian teams joined. At this stage, the competition became known as the PRO12. After several more successful seasons, the competition grew once again and became known as the PRO14, when two teams from South Africa joined. Fast forward to 2021 and four South African teams from Super Rugby joined the PRO14 and the United Rugby Championship was born.

Format of the United Rugby Championship

Sixteen teams compete in the United Rugby Championship, including four Irish teams, two Italian teams, two Scottish teams, four South African teams and four Welsh teams. These teams are split into four regional pools, with the Scottish and Italian teams featuring in the same pool to make four pools of four teams.

Each side plays against their regional pool rivals at home and away. They also play a further 12 matches against sides from the other pools. At the end of the round-robin phase, the top eight sides in the United Rugby Championship table progress to the playoffs.

Additionally, the top side from each regional pool in the United Rugby Championship also qualifies for the Heineken Champions Cup. The remaining four places in the competition then go to the highest ranked teams who have not yet qualified. The eight remaining teams then play in the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

What is the United Rugby Championship?

The United Rugby Championship (URC) is an annual rugby union tournament. Founded in 2001, the competition consists of 16 rugby teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy and South Africa. Previously named the Celtic League, Magners League and Guinness Pro, it was renamed as the United Rugby Championship in 2021.

How does the United Rugby Championship work?

The United Rugby Championship works by splitting teams into four geographical pools: Scottish and Italian Pool, Irish Pool, Welsh Pool and South African Pool. Teams play one match at home and one match away against each team in their pool. Each team also plays one game against each of the 12 teams that are not in their geographic pool. This means teams play 18 games in total.

At the end of the round-robin stage, the results are transferred to a singular league table. The top 8 teams enter a knockout phase and an overall champion is crowned following quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

There are 16 teams that play in the United Rugby Championship. The teams (and the years they joined) are: 

- Ireland (2001): Connacht, Leinster, Munster, Ulster 

- Scotland (2001): Edinburgh, Glasgow Warriors

- Wales (2003): Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys, Scarlets

- Italy (2010): Benetton, Zebre Parma

When was the first edition of the United Rugby Championship?

The first edition of the Rugby Championship was held in 2001, when the tournament was known as the Celtic League. Back then, the tournament consisted of teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The championship underwent numerous sponsor and name changes between 2006 and 2021, when it was renamed as the United Rugby Championship.
