10 of the best tweets about the bombshell Stuart Hogg retirement
There has been a massive online reaction to Monday’s bombshell announcement by Stuart Hogg that he will retire from playing at the end of the upcoming Rugby World Cup with Scotland. It’s clear from what was generally published that the 30-year-old is a very much loved full-back who will be hugely missed when he hangs up the boots.
Unless Scotland reach the quarter-finals, the last match that Hogg is currently scheduled to play in his stellar career will be on October 7 when the Scots take on Ireland in their final pool game in Paris.
However, Scotland won’t want their campaign to end there and the full-back’s retirement announcement is now sure to fuel the emotions leading into that Stade de France showdown against a rival that beat them at BT Murrayfield earlier this month in the Guinness Six Nations in Hogg’s most recent Test appearance as he missed the subsequent round five game versus Italy through injury.
The Exeter-based Hogg explained that his club and country retirement decision was based on his feeling that his body can’t much longer achieve the standards he sets himself and it was always his intention to finish at the top of the game, hence his revelation to exit after RWC 2023. Here are some of the best tweets in reaction to that shock announcement:
Stuart Hogg is the first player I remember watching from the start of their Scotland career. I feel so lucky to have been present at so many of the games mentioned in this thread https://t.co/DlJyxJG3Hb

Stuart Hogg’s try against Italy in 2013 (the first clip) was what sparked a love for Scottish Rugby in this English lass, and a love of rugby union full stop in fact.
A couple of years later, I caved in completely and devoted myself to the team ?? I’ll never look back. https://t.co/Qgjsk7d0dK— Steph Brawn (@BrawnJourno) March 27, 2023
Ignoring the many, many things Stuart Hogg has achieved over his career, I am so bored of this take.
He wouldn't be a better player if Scotland had won the 6N.
Johnny Sexton wouldn't be a worse one if Ireland & Leinster had won nothing.
Stop with the idiot child hot takes. pic.twitter.com/M90ESySfrw

Well, he joins Hastings, Irvine and KJF in the pantheon of post-war Scottish fullbacks- and maybe he was the best of the lot – Stuart Hogg: Scotland full-back to retire from rugby after World Cup – https://t.co/0KFVtqb4kg

There are few players who genuinely bring fans to the edge of their seats with expectation as soon as they get their hands on the ball.
Stuart Hogg is a special talent and will remain so until he calls it a day after RWC2023 where he’ll be keen to create more great memories. pic.twitter.com/TTHgRC6l9L

Very few people 11 years on still generate the level of excitement he does when he gets the ball.
Glad he is going out at a time when Scotland are strongest they have been for many a year.
Best of luck to him!

Let's hope Stuart Hogg isn't giving Finn Russell any ideas. That's a shocker. So young. Thought he would be good for another 5 years. Good luck to him – what a player. All you can say is 'thanks'. His try for @Scotlandteam v @IrishRugby was for the ageshttps://t.co/rlUwaXv7ad

This reads like Stuart Hogg won the #SNPLeadershipElection. And in all honesty, I’d like to see it. pic.twitter.com/xDiCI3Yhb7

I was lucky enough to be there the night Stuart Hogg made his @GlasgowWarriors' debut v Dragons at Firhill – clear straight away he was a special player.
A privilege to be able to see him play the vast majority of his 121 games for Glasgow & 100 for Scotland.
Thanks Hoggy https://t.co/zgVJ4d7Vtz
