All Blacks and Springboks set for Twickenham clash

The All Blacks will play the Springboks in a 2023 pre-Rugby World Cup warm-up in Twickenham, it has been announced.

The match will take place on Friday, the 25 August at 7.30pm UK time and will be the first time they’ve played each other at the stadium since a tense Rugby World Cup 2015 semi-final.

The game will take place just two weeks prior to the kick-off of the 2023 Rugby World Cup and will undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated RWC warm-ups leading into the flagship tournament. It will also provide the RFU with a significant boost to their coffers in a year where November Tests will be shelved.

“We’re excited to play this vital fixture before the Rugby World Cup at the iconic Twickenham Stadium.
said Springboks head coach Jacques Nienaber. “There is a large contingent of passionate expats and Springbok supporters in London, and we have no doubt they will come out in numbers and give us a lift before we attempt to defend our World Cup crown.”

SA Rugby director of rugby Rassie Erasmus said: “The Springboks and All Blacks share one of the greatest rivalries in rugby, and to face them at Twickenham will be an exciting experience for the players and our fans. I have no doubt it is going to be an epic encounter.”

All Blacks’ Head Coach Ian Foster: “This match will form an important part of our preparations for Rugby World Cup. Matches against the Springboks are always hard-fought and we are expecting nothing less than a titanic battle on this unique occasion.”

RFU CEO Bill Sweeney commented: “We are looking forward to welcoming two powerhouses of global rugby. Both nations have sizable ex-pat communities in London and beyond, who will no doubt contribute to what is set to be an electric atmosphere at Twickenham Stadium.”

I think it's too soon to answer to your question. Since 2022 and the arrival of this staff, France have lost their way of playing ,the team regress every year and some picks are very strange. Séraphine Okemba was one of the 4/5 best and fastest players of seven , in this team she play 7 and makes lineouts and scrums. I am not sure she touch the ball in play saturday…

I initially felt like you, but I have changed somewhat as he has enough English back up staff and coaches to keep him grounded in our ways if necessary. On the the other hand perhaps we need someone who understands the NZ ways and takes the best to instill in the Red Roses game. NZ have been our closest rivals for many years and have largely come out on top when it matters - World Cup finals.

John Mitchell was NZs coach at the mens RWC 2003. He oversaw our second worst result. I genuinely wish the Red Roses all the best but they need an English coach who understands your game, your players and your mentality. JM is not the person

Watching the last few rounds of the PWR, my feeling was that the opposition is a factor in selection. Kildunne does have weaknesses in her positioning for kicks, and was caught out of position on long kicks several times - there aren’t that many female kickers who can put up a long ball with a lot of accuracy, and I don’t think she’s used to facing them.


Sing is much more in the mould of a traditional fullback from the men’s game, both in terms of fielding kicks and sending them back, and I can see a role for her if England are facing a strong team with a powerful kicking game. She doesn’t offer the attacking threat that Kildunne does, but when you can also field Dow and Breach, you don’t necessarily need a running threat from all of your back three.

I think when you think of expanding the game you need to look at countries like Spain.

Their improvement in 7s and 15s has been significant. If you can breakthrough in Spain then that is a seismic moment for world rugby. But will world rugby see this? Or continue with its money making agenda for Tier1s via ‘Nations Cups’ and it’s Mickey Mouse ‘World Cup’ which has been hithero a boasting rights tournament for a couple of teams.

A tad ungracious. The ABs side that got scalped in Chicago was - save for 2 locks - the same squad that had been on a 17 game win streak. A streak that included 40 PTS + wins against France and SA. 30 PTS+ wins against AUS.


They just got beaten at their own game that day and outclassed by the best 9/10 axis in the game at that time.
