All Blacks player ratings vs Australia | Bledisloe Cup I

New Zealand All Blacks' Will Jordan (C) runs to score a try as Australia Wallabies' players Tom Wright (R) and Nic White fail to tackle him during the Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup test match between Australia and New Zealand at Stadium Australia in Sydney on September 21, 2024. The All Blacks lost starting fullback Beauden Barrett to illness before kickoff but they came out firing in Sydney with 28 first half points.

Will Jordan scored within two minutes to set the mood and at 21-0 with tries to Rieko Ioane and Caleb Clarke, a massacre looked on the cards.

But the Wallabies scored two tries to Fraser McReight and Matt Faessler to stay in the game and the Wallabies mounted a big comeback to finish just short, 31-28.

Here’s how the All Blacks rated in Sydney.

1. Ethan de Groot – 6
A quieter afternoon for De Groot as the All Blacks ran rampant. Had two carries and three tackles in his 40 and there were only a handful of scrums. First scrum applied a bit of pressure, wheeling the Wallabies. The Australian scrum held up strongly with Tupou and Bell. First All Black penalty won came late in the first half for collapsing. Off at 40.

2. Codie Taylor – 8
The lineout functioned well for the most part with one overthrow error. Carried strongly in close and made a heap of tackles finishing with nine. All Blacks were exposed by a good lineout play at the tail by the Wallabies for the McReight try.

3. Tyrel Lomax – 7

The All Blacks scrum was less dominant then usual but Lomax still kept a clean sheet on his side, not losing any penalties.

4. Scott Barrett – 8
Lead pod runner for the All Blacks as they controlled the gain line well. Secured kickoffs well. Got through a load of defence with 12 tackles.

5. Tupou Vaa’i – 8
A classy performance from Vaa’i with 12 tackles on defence. Assisted for Jordan early with a nice pullback pass as the lead pod runner. One lineout steal in the first half. Off at 66.

6. Wallace Sititi – 9
Another stellar showing by Sititi, strong carries powering the All Blacks’ attack. Showed good footwork in close and used the space well out wide when on the left flank. Was a frequent lineout target for the All Blacks and disrupted many Australian throws.  Had a clutch ruck penalty on the goal line in the final five minutes.

7. Sam Cane – 6
A day for cleaning rucks for Cane as All Blacks enjoyed mountains of possessoin. Missed a one-on-one on Matt Faessler for the Wallabies second try. Had a loose ball turnover in the second half through hustle. Off at 63.

8. Ardie Savea – 8

Spent some time out in the wider channels on attack and looked dangerous. Had an offload to Reece go forward that will go down as a missed chance. Scored inside Reece on a breakaway. Added a ruck penalty with the Wallabies attacking inside the 22 in the second half. Carried hard in close with his signature leg drive back in action. Finished with 13 tackles.

9. Cortez Ratima – 9

Ratima was on fire at Accor, his best showing for the All Blacks so far in his young career. A try assist for Rieko Ioane running through tired ruck defenders a highlight in the first half. Looked dangerous with his snipes, showing strength through contact on multiple occasions. Beat seven defenders in total.

10. Damian McKenzie – 6
Lots of good but just lacking finish this afternoon. Kicking strategy early was a lot of high balls but they often went uncontested. Off the tee McKenzie was on. Had a nice strip steal on the Wallabies on the edge of the 22. Made most of his high ball takes in the backfield. Had a line break late in the first half but pass inside went astray. Bombed another half chance with an unnecessary back hand flick with Lienert-Brown in support. Another forward pass ruled out a stunning try to Ratima. His distribution inside the shape was tidy against a rather passive Wallabies defence.

11. Caleb Clarke – 7
Powerful runs all day. Started with a nice offload early to Wallace Sititi to create the half-break leading to the Ioane try. Scored with a power finish through two defenders on his first carry down the left flank. Had another great aerial take on one kick chase. Unfortunately gambled with an intercept in the final 10 and got a yellow.

12. Jordie Barrett – 8
One of his best showings this year. A lot of traffic came Barrett’s way in defence and the launch attack hinged on the No 12. He ran hard and showed a nice array of passes in the midfield. Had a try disallowed late in the first half.

13. Rieko Ioane – 7
Scored his 37th Test try for the All Blacks with a run down the left wing like his younger days. Had line break on a launch play but the risky pass was intercepted. Taken into touch down a narrow channel on a counter-attack. Some nice touches in support as well.

14. Sevu Reece – 8

A classic intercept by Reece in the 24th minute to set up Ardie Savea. Reece broke through the cover defence and found his No 8 on the inside. A huge ruck penalty by Reece came in the final quarter, killing a key Wallabies possession. Off at 76.

15. Will Jordan – 9
Scored with his first touch coming out the back of a pod and slicing the Wallabies up the middle just two minutes in. Had brilliant injections all afternoon and offered an error-free showing at the back. Six defenders beaten. His best showing at fullback so far.

Substitutes

16. Asafo Aumua – 4 – On at 62. Made his first throw. Had bad read in defence on Salakaia-Loto that led to Paisami’s try.

17. Tamaiti Williams – On at 40. First scrum with Williams at loosehead was a penalty for the All Blacks. Had a strong carry near the line.

18. Pasilio Tosi – 4 – Made some powerful carries but was penalised for a high shot on Lolesio.

19. Sam Darry – 6 – On at 66. Lots of defence for Darry with seven tackles.

20. Luke Jacobson – 6 – On at 63. Seven tackles for Jacobson.

21. TJ Perenara – 7 – On at 57. First touch was a booming touch finder to clear the lines and relieve pressure. Charged on his next clearance. Finished the game by winning a tackle turnover to seal the game.

22. Anton Lienert-Brown – 5 – On at 40 for Barrett. Just didn’t sync at second five as well as Barrett. Got yellow carded for team indiscretions. Seven tackles for Lienert-Brown.

23. Harry Plummer – N/A – On at 76. Made his debut but no chance to really impact the match.

Will Jordan predictably reviews well against the weak sides and then becomes captain invisible against the big four opposition of Ireland, England, France, Boks and other abrasive teams. However the team went again to pieces in the final quarter and he's not able to playmaker so owns part of the problem along with McKenzie who looks more and more like a fullback with each game at ten.

DMac looks more and more like a liability anywhere, BB is a far better fullback.

Another Ben Smith masterclass of bulldust. You would think the ABs won convincingly instead of hanging on by the skin of their teeth.

When are Rugby Pass going to give someone who knows something about the game this job.

R
Rooksie 59 days ago

They would of cantered in if not for 2 yellow cards ..at 1 stage down to 13 ..Aussie could of won if they were gd enough but they weren't..some awesome try saving tackles by TJ and others and that's all she wrote bro ..signed ..sealed..delivered..cup stays at home yet again..yepp iee

Yep, it makes you sound like Bull Shark, well over a point difference in the ratings between two closer opponents in South Africa and Argentina.

The ratings here with NZ, and of the Wallablies, far more accurately portray the outcome of the match.

J
JW 60 days ago

Ratings are only half a point difference on avg(I'll do same with the other game too actually). Probably still a bit too much of a gape, but, and I know I've been saying they should give up on him, thats with Marika rated a 4 (was he that bad?).

Bwahahaha

You would think the ABs won by 30+. Just ridiculous. Typical Ben. 🤦

DMac’s poor passing in open play blew 3 tries- a poor, low pass to Reese, a forward pass to Jordan, and a pass to nobody 10m out from tryline.

He has the shortest clearance kicks of any Tier 1 test 10 in years. He is a liability exiting his own half, especially off restarts.

T
Teddy 60 days ago

Not a ten, at all. No game management. You never see him barking at his pack or giving them a chewing.

He never even seems to talk on the pitch.

Wilts under pressure.

J

I would say a lot of them over ran is passes, but at the same time he should have the critical thinking to say 'bugger, they won't catch that, better hold onto it.'

S
SC 60 days ago

These ratings are 1-2 points too high for every player except Sititi, Ratima, and Jordan who deserved 8-9 range

Will Jordan shut up those people who said he should be always on the wing. That performance at fullback was brilliant , the try he got 2 minutes in to the game, like so many he scored for the Crusaders since 2019. Cortez Ratima was magnificent at halfback. Wallace Sititi was everywhere on the field. The redemption man Sevu Reece did great.Codie Taylor , player of the year. Sam Darry showed he has so many AB games left. Australia , gutsy and brilliant in second half. True spirit of great Wallabies teams in second half.

To say the rest of the world has caught up with Nz would be wrong. Nz has fallen behind. Worst All Black team in ages?

Jordan had one good touch and got a 9? Jfc

G

Will Jordan , had most metres gained and was everywhere. After that, you still want Beauden back at fullback? You watched a different game mate

S
SC 60 days ago

Watch the game again and you will see that Jordan had 4 long runs which included a try assist and two more try assists if TMO had not over-ruled (one incorrectly).

Wow reading these ratings just confirmed how 1 eyed BS is pure bull sh#t

M
Md1991 60 days ago

According to Ben smiths ratings you’d think the all blacks won by 30 points. They actually nearly lost. Goes to show how low the standard is in BS mind. A win by 3 is amazing

M
Md1991 61 days ago

Hey Ben, the mighty all blacks nearly blew a 21 point lead. Against a developing Australian side. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. Would be nice to see Australia beat them in NZ.

F

Hey moron, The ABs built that 21 point lead to start with. 80 mins... led by 3... win game. Basic stuff. Ive explained this to you before. Not a sharp tool eh. Just a tool

Coin flip on what to rate everyone. Terrible article

M
Md1991 59 days ago

A coin flip would have been more accurate… 50% of the time you’d expect to be right.

B
Bull Shark 61 days ago

Wow. Near perfect scores being dished out there.

Tamaiti was either so poor for 40 or Ben forgot about him during the match. Considering Aumua gets a rating after playing only 18.

Can’t wait to see the wallabies ratings.

M
Md1991 60 days ago

The wallabies ratings will be s$:/. But they only lost by 3. Obviously that’s because the ref was so unfair… or so BS would have you believe.

'Passionate reunion of France and New Zealand shows Fabien Galthie is wrong to rest his stars'

Ok, managed to read the full article..

... New Zealand’s has only 14 and the professional season is all over within four months. In France, club governance is the responsibility of an independent organisation [the Ligue Nationale de Rugby or LNR] which is entirely separate from the host union [the Fédération Française de Rugby or FFR]. Down south New Zealand Rugby runs the provincial and the national game.

That is the National Provincial Championship, a competition of 14 representative union based teams run through the SH international window and only semi professional (paid only during it's running). It is run by NZR and goes for two and a half months.

Super Rugby is a competition involving 12 fully professional teams, of which 5 are of New Zealand eligibility, and another joint administered team of Pacific Island eligibility, with NZR involvement. It was a 18 week competition this year, so involved (randomly chosen I believe) extra return fixtures (2 or 3 home and away derbys), and is run by Super Rugby Pacific's own independent Board (or organisation). The teams may or may not be independently run and owned (note, this does not necessarily mean what you think of as 'privately owned').

LNR was setup by FFR and the French Government to administer the professional game in France. In New Zealand, the Players Association and Super Rugby franchises agreed last month to not setup their own governance structure for professional rugby and re-aligned themselves with New Zealand Rugby. They had been proposing to do something like the English model, I'm not sure how closely that would have been aligned to the French system but it did not sound like it would have French union executive representation on it like the LNR does.

In the shaky isles the professional pyramid tapers to a point with the almighty All Blacks. In France the feeling for country is no more important than the sense of fierce local identity spawned at myriad clubs concentrated in the southwest. Progress is achieved by a nonchalant shrug and the wide sweep of nuanced negotiation, rather than driven from the top by a single intense focus.

Yes, it is pretty much a 'representative' selection system at every level, but these union's are having to fight for their existence against the regime that is NZR, and are currently going through their own battle, just as France has recently as I understand it. A single focus, ala the French game, might not be the best outcome for rugby as a whole.

For pure theatre, it is a wonderful article so far. I prefer 'Ntamack New Zealand 2022' though.

The young Crusader still struggles to solve the puzzle posed by the shorter, more compact tight-heads at this level but he had no problem at all with Colombe.

It was interesting to listen to Manny during an interview on Maul or Nothing, he citied that after a bit of banter with the All Black's he no longer wanted one of their jersey's after the game. One of those talks was an eye to eye chat with Tamaiti Williams, there appear to be nothing between the lock and prop, just a lot of give and take. I thought TW angled in and caused Taylor to pop a few times, and that NZ were lucky to be rewarded.

f you have a forward of 6ft 8ins and 145kg, and he is not at all disturbed by a dysfunctional set-piece, you are in business.

He talked about the clarity of the leadership that helped alleviate any need for anxiety at the predicaments unfolding before him. The same cannot be said for New Zealand when they had 5 minutes left to retrieve a match winning penalty, I don't believe. Did the team in black have much of a plan at any point in the game? I don't really call an autonomous 10 vehicle they had as innovative. I think Razor needs to go back to the dealer and get a new game driver on that one.

Vaa’i is no match for his power on the ground. Even in reverse, Meafou is like a tractor motoring backwards in low gear, trampling all in its path.

Vaa'i actually stops him in his tracks. He gets what could have been a dubious 'tackle' on him?

A high-level offence will often try to identify and exploit big forwards who can be slower to reload, and therefore vulnerable to two quick plays run at them consecutively.

Yes he was just standing on his haunches wasn't he? He mentioned that in the interview, saying that not only did you just get up and back into the line to find the opposition was already set and running at you they also hit harder than anything he'd experienced in the Top 14. He was referring to New Zealands ultra-physical, burst-based Super style of course, which he was more than a bit surprised about. I don't blame him for being caught out.

He still sent the obstruction back to the repair yard though!

What wouldn’t the New Zealand rugby public give to see the likes of Mauvaka and Meafou up front..

Common now Nick, don't go there! Meafou showed his Toulouse shirt and promptly got his citizenship, New Zealand can't have him, surely?!?

As I have said before with these subjects, really enjoy your enthusiasm for their contribution on the field and I'd love to see more of their shapes running out for Vern Cotter and the like styled teams.
