Allister Coetzee remplacé par Jacques Burger à la tête de la Namibie

Allister Coetzee, ancien sélectionneur des Springboks, a été remplacé par l’ancien capitaine, le mythique Jacques Burger, d’après le journal namibien Sports Wrap.

Coetzee avait pris en main la Namibie en juin 2021. Il avait permis à la sélection de se qualifier pour la Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2023 en remportant la Coupe d’Afrique de Rugby 2022. Il n’a toutefois pas réussi à décrocher la première victoire de la sélection en Coupe du Monde, la Namibie ayant perdu contre l’Uruguay après s’être inclinée contre l’Italie, les All Blacks et la France.

L’ancien boss des Springboks n’est pas non plus parvenu à remporter un septième titre continental de suite car les Namibiens ont perdu 32-10 contre le Zimbabwe, futur vainqueur, en demi-finale.

La défaite contre le Zimbabwe s’avérait être la deuxième de l’année pour la Namibie, après le revers 22-37 essuyé contre le Portugal à Windhoek en juillet.

Burger est une figure très populaire en Namibie et en Angleterre après son passage réussi aux Saracens. Il y a prouvé qu’il faisait partie des plus gros plaqueurs du monde. L’ancien capitaine de la Namibie a pris sa retraite internationale après la Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2015 avant de définitivement raccrocher les crampons l’année suivante.

Le Zimbabwe et le Kenya se rapprochant doucement de la Namibie, c’est une véritable mission qui se présente à Burger, qui doit qualifier son équipe pour la Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2027 en Australie. Le vainqueur de la Coupe d’Afrique de Rugby 2025 décrochera une qualification automatique. La Namibie s’est qualifiée pour toutes les éditions depuis 1999.

Sports Wrap a également confirmé qu’il sera accompagné de Chrysander Botha, son ancien coéquipier en sélection, au poste d’entraîneur principal. Botha sera assisté par les anciens internationaux namibiens Jaco Engels, Rohan Kitshoff et David Philander. Sergio de la Harp sera en charge de la préparation physique.
