Argentina charged into the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens quarter-finals with a stunning 35-7 demolition of fan favourites Fiji on Saturday, which capped off a practically perfect run in pool play for coach Santi Gomez Coraā€™s team.

After a one-sided 35-7 win over Ireland to open their campaign and an emphatic 52-5 triumph over the USA later on Friday, Los Pumas Sevens turned their focus to a blockbuster rugby sevens bout between two heavyweight contenders on day two.

Argentinaā€™s ā€œdreamā€ on the HSBC SVNS Series is to take out the top prize at the winner-takes-all World Championship in Los Angeles, but for now, theyā€™re taking each games as it comes, which included a pool stage blockbuster against the Fijians.

The Hong Kong Sevens can be seen as a home event of sorts for Fiji, with a large contingent of fans bringing the noise at the all-new Kai Tak Stadium. But Argentina made a statement just about one month out from the World Championship with a masterclass in this match.

Matteo Graziano scored a double, while Luciano Gonzalez, Santiago Mare and Santino Zangara also crossed for five-pointers during the 28-point rout. Fiji scored their sole try through Joji Nasova in the 11th minute but the match was all but over by that stage already.

ā€œReally difficult to explain what the sensation is,ā€ Argentinaā€™s Santiago Alvarez told RugbyPass when asked what itā€™s like to beat Fiji in Hong Kong China. ā€œIā€™m very, very proud of this team.

ā€œReally, really happy. Just now, turn over the page and start thinking on the quarter-finals.ā€

Argentina fell painfully short of the SVNS Seresā€™ overall title last season. After making history in Singapore by winning the league title, Los Pumas Sevens met Antoine Dupontā€™s France in the World Championship decider in Madrid, with Les Bleus Sevens winning that one.

The Argentinians have since reemerged as the team to beat in menā€™s sevens. Following a third-place finish at the season opener in Dubai, Argentina later took out Cup titles at Perthā€™s HBF Park and Vancouverā€™s BC Place.

    Whatā€™s their secret?

    ā€œI donā€™t know. Really, I donā€™t know,ā€ Alvarez insisted with a smile.

ā€œWe try to give our best each day, each moment. We give it all for this team.

ā€œWe left things in Argentina, we stopped doing things because of this team and we enjoy being in this team.

ā€œThere is nothing I can tell you to [pinpoint] but Iā€™m trying to enjoy this moment now and trying to be better.ā€

Argentina are currently in the box seat to repeat last seasonā€™s heroics in the regular season. With only two events left in the round-robin, including this weekendā€™s leg in Hong Kong China, Argentina are on the cusp of greatness as the first-place side on the menā€™s standings.

Spain have been incredibly consistent this season are occupy second with 64 points, while Fiji and South Africa share third with 62 points. At the other end of the top eight, Great Britain and New Zealand are looking to climb up the ladder by seasonā€™s end.

Los Angelesā€™s Dignity Health Sports Park will host the World Championship on May 3-4, and while winning that event is certainly the goal for Argentina, Alvarez insisted thereā€™s a lot of work that needs to be done between now and then.

ā€œWeā€™re trying not to think about LA.

ā€œOf course itā€™s our dream, our objective is winning LAā€¦ but weā€™re going step by step and trying to be better.ā€

ā€˜Current form doesnā€™t matterā€™: Commentator on potential All Blacks midfield

I donā€™t really share Johnsonā€™s opinion. Nothing better than Tupaea and Lienert-Brown in NZ? Itā€™s a good duo, and he wouldnā€™t look out of place, but I think we can do better. Tavatavanawai seems superior to Tupaea at 12. Heā€™s a brute force, who makes few mistakes (which can still be criticized in Tupaea), formidable both with and without the ball in close contact. I can see him playing with Proctor. On paper, this combination would be very, very interesting, in the same philosophy as the iconic Nonu/C Smith duo.

Anyway, I remain convinced that in Razorā€™s mind, Jordie Barrett is indispensable at center, and he could quickly team up with Leicester Faingaā€™anuku. Iā€™m betting on that in the near future.

However, a Tavatanawai/Proctor duo would be very interesting. Ennor also seems to be a good option instead of Proctor, who still hasnā€™t played this season. But Ennor has only played one match... he needs to be seen again and get some game time. There is a lot of talent in New Zealand in these two positions. The hardest part will be cutting players who could make a difference for many teams. The choices are going to be tough. If I had to make a bold bet, and unlike Johnson, I donā€™t see Tupaea being selected, and I imagine ALB could be in a tight spot against Proctor and Ennor if they are fit.

I imagine Jordie, Havili, Rieko, and Fainga'anuku with Tavatavanawai. Ennor or Proctor if Fainga'anuku is not selected in July. And ALB if Jordie is rested
