Bennett and Strauss' Glasgow careers over due to injury

Glasgow and Scotland centre Mark Bennett

Scotland international centre Mark Bennett is facing the prospect of up to a year out after having surgery on an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury.

Bennett sustained the problem in the Six Nations clash with England at Twickenham last month and has undergone a reconstructive operation at a hospital in Glasgow.

Wednesday’s update confirms that Bennett has played his final game for Glasgow Warriors, with the 24-year-old set to join Edinburgh ahead of next season.

Back-row forward Josh Strauss will also leave Glasgow without playing another game for the Pro12 club, as he continues his recovery from a kidney injury picked up for Scotland against France in February.

Strauss is due to join Sale Sharks next season but will not return to full training for at least another six weeks.

“We’re disappointed that Mark’s time at the club has come to an end in this way, and it also looks like Josh may not play for us again as he continues his gradual return to training,” said Glasgow head coach Gregor Townsend, himself leaving to succeed Vern Cotter as Scotland head coach at the end of the campaign.

“We wish both players all the best with their rehab and look forward to having them as part of our wider group for the remainder of the season.”
