Billy Proctor commits to All Blacks and Hurricanes with multi-year deal
One of New Zealand’s newest All Blacks has put pen to paper on a contract extension, keeping him in contention for higher honours through until the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Billy Proctor will remain with the Hurricanes for at least another two seasons, having debuted for the club in 2019. The midfielder signed his first contract with the Wellington club at just 19 years of age, impressing so much in his rookie season that he was then offered a five-year contract.
Now a two-time All Black, the 25-year-old has returned from an Achilles injury in recent weeks and hit the ground running in Super Rugby Pacific, proving to be in damaging form for a Hurricanes side on the rise in the competition standings.
“I’m excited and proud to be signing on with the club and representing my hometown for the next couple of years,” Proctor said.
Head coach Clarke Laidlaw shared his view of his midfield star, whom he named as co-captain ahead of the season.
“Billy is a huge part of this team; he has been with the Hurricanes his whole career, since he was a teenager, and he has grown and matured into an outstanding professional,” Laidlaw said.
“It was a frustrating start to the year for Billy with injury, but his return to play the last few rounds has shown the skill and leadership he offers this team. We’re excited to have him in the team and recommitting to the Hurricanes for the next few years.
“He’s going to play some amazing rugby going forward, and we can’t wait to watch him continue to grow his ability on the field and his leadership. We genuinely feel like his best rugby is ahead of him and he’s maturing into a top-class professional.”
The sentiment of growth and excitement for the future was echoed by Chris Lendrum, NZR General Manager Professional Rugby & Performance.
“It’s been great to see Billy’s evolution and improvement as a player since his first professional contract with New Zealand Rugby in 2018,” Lendrum said.
“For someone so young, he’s made a significant contribution to Wellington rugby and the Hurricanes both on and off the field, and he’s carried that through to our teams in black, including with his All Blacks debut last year. We’re proud of what he’s achieved so far and look forward to the next part of his journey.”
