Ashton to face RFU hearing over red card

Chris Ashton has received a blow ahead of the new Premiership season with the RFU confirming on Tuesday he’ll face an independent disciplinary panel

The RFU have said both Ashton and his Sale Sharks teammate Alexandru Tarus of Sale Sharks will appear before the panel.

In a statemtent, the RFU said: “Ashton was shown a red card by referee Roman Poite in the 46th minute of the pre-season fixture between Castres Olympique and Sale Sharks on Friday 17 August 2018. This was for a tip tackle on Rory Kockott contrary to law 9.18 (A player must not lift an opponent off the ground and drop or drive that player so that their head and/or upper body make contact with the ground).

“Tarus was also shown a red card by referee Roman Poite in the 73rd minute of the same match. This was for dangerous play in a ruck contrary to law 9.20.

“Both hearings will take place in London on Thursday 23 August, Ashton’s at 13:30 with Tarus’ following immediately after. The panel will be chaired by Richard Whittam QC, with Becky Essex and one other panel member to be confirmed. ”

Ashton could miss the start of the season if he’s punished.

I hate to break it to you, but I could just flip that same argument on you and say if you can’t take the replies to Irelands arrogance then stop lying about SA and NZ. As for your nit picking on a hand full of games, SA still have the superior overall record against Ireland. South Africa played in the same group as Ireland and if I recall correctly must of had the harder draw as they had to actually win a quarter, a semi and a final. So if you are on this page whinging about literally everything, don’t get too upset when you get your own shade back in spades.

What are you talking about?…. As I have mentioned elsewhere, 6:2 only works with Marcus art 23 given the need for a back up 10. It’s mainly about 10, not 15.

Marcus Smith has started at 10 vs Australia 5 times and has won 3 of them, including a 3 test series a couple of years ago in Oz.


Where does this idea of destroying him come from? “Behind a dominant pack on a warm mid-summer esque afternoon” - you have described what the Lions will do here against a weaker Oz pack, and even nailed the weather, so surely Smith will flourish by your own logic?

Not sure if he is ahead of Finau, given McMillans strategy to use AB forwards as finishers, but Parker has played the house down all season. He’s a big unit about 197cm and 118kg. Reminds me a bit of Liam Squire at his best.

They have two good uns in Jack Crowley and Sam Prendergast but that kind of multi-gnerational experience is dearly bought.

The Crusaders backline was toothless throughout this game and particularly so in the second half as the whole team tired and collapsed under Chiefs pressure. Forward effort was also poor as a huge amount of possession was conceded far too easily. Not the first time the Crusaders have lost the possession stats to their opposition.

Justin is right, a halfback that's able to kick off left or right is a huge asset and needs capping immediately to ensure he doesn't end up in the Irish team as the emerald isles current Kiwi halfback is nearing the end of his high test career.

I don’t think there would be much debate around Roigard and Ratima being 1 and 2. I like Preston as 3rd option. He looks to have much better kicking game than Hotham who will probably get selected as they have been grooming him.
