Eddie Jones will be without Jack Clifford for the autumn internationals

Injuries sustained in Wasps’ Premiership clash with Northampton Saints yesterday have knocked two England players out of Eddie Jones November Tests squad.

The RFU confirmed this afternoon that Matt Mullan and Elliot Daly will not travel to Portugal with the England squad this afternoon after picking up injuries yesterday.

Mullan (elbow) and Daly (knee) will remain with their club for treatment and will have scans over the next couple of days.

No additional players have been called up to travel today concluded the statement.

Jones has named his England squad to begin their preparations for the opening match of the Old Mutual Wealth Series against Argentina.

Wasps flanker James Haskell has been left out of England’s squad for their first November international against Argentina at Twickenham, but Denny Solomona makes the cut.

England will play Argentina on 11 November at Twickenham Stadium before facing Australia (18 November) and Samoa (25 November).

34 players would have convened today to travel to Portugal.

This will be England’s fourth Test against the Pumas in the last year having beaten them in last season’s Old Mutual Wealth Series and twice on the tour of Argentina in June.

Speaking earlier in the week, Jones said: “Our first match against Argentina in the Old Mutual Wealth Series is a significant game for England and everything we have been doing in our training camps so far this season has been geared around getting the detail right in our preparation on how we want to play and win against them next month.

“This will be the fourth time we have played against Argentina in the last 12 months and the last time we play them before 2019, so we want to make sure our record against them is 4-0.”

Exeter Chiefs’ Sam Simmonds receives his first call up into the England squad. The 22 year-old has made 27 appearances for his club, scoring 13 tries and was a key member of the side that won the Premiership title last season.

Jones has also included 18 year-old Marcus Smith (Harlequins) and 20 year-old Zach Mercer (Bath Rugby) as apprentices in the England squad. Both players won’t be named in match day squads but will be involved in England’s training and preparation for the three-match series.

Razor's 2024 All Blacks Christmas wish list

"It seems like the idea of Ardie Savea moving to openside flanker is no longer on the table"

Says who? Savea was picked on the open side, with Wallace Sititi at 8, against France. It makes no difference to Savea’s game, whatsoever and allows Sititi to play in his preferred position. It also provides an option to bring in a third loose forward that may provide a better lineout option and a big body to compete with some of the big bodies found in other teams.

It was unfortunate that Finau was injured so early on against France before he had a chance to show how he might combine with Savea and Sititi, and there is still a possibility that Hoskins Sotutu might be effective alongside them too.

Don’t count out viable options.
