Canada name team for show down with the USA

Olivia DeMerchant (L) and DaLeaka Menin (R) of Canada during the Pool B Rugby World Cup 2021 match between Italy and Canada at Waitakere Stadium on October 16, 2022, in Auckland, New Zealand.

Canada coach Kevin Rouet has made five personnel and two positional changes to his starting line-up for the third and final pool game of the World Cup against the USA at Waitakere Stadium on 23 October.

Brittany Kassil is promoted back into the starting line-up with Olivia DeMerchant dropping to the bench. McKinley Hunt earns a start for the first time in the tournament, partnering Courtney Holtkamp in the second row. RWC 2014 runner-up Karen Paquin comes in on the blindside in the only other change to the forwards.

With Brianna Miller ruled out of the rest of the tournament through injury, Justine Pelletier will start alongside Alex Tessier in a new-look half-back pairing. Tessier shifts in one position to start a test at fly-half for the first time since their 15-9 victory over USA in the World Rugby Pacific Four Series in November 2021.

Sara Kaljuvee moves to inside centre with Alysha Corrigan joining her in midfield for her first RWC start, whilst five players come on to the bench for this match including prop Mikiela Nelson, second-row Ngalula Fuamba, back row Gabrielle Senft and utility backs Anais Holly and Julia Schell.

The Pacific Four Series match with USA in Tauranga in June was Rouet’s first as head coach and Sophie de Goede’s debut as Canada captain, both securing a winning start with the 36-5 triumph.

Canada have won their last five meetings with neighbours USA since a 20-18 loss in July 2019. They have never won six in a row against the Women’s Eagles.

They have lost both of their Rugby World Cup meetings with USA – their semi-final 46-6 in Amsterdam in 1998 and their fifth-place play-off 23-20 in Guildford in 2010.

‘The problem with this year’s Champions Cup? Too many English clubs’

"Yes I was the one who suggested to use a UEFA style point. And I guessed, that based on the last 5 years we should start with 6 top14, 6 URC and 4 Prem."

Yes I am aware that you suggested it, but you then went on to say that we should initially start with a balance that clearly wasn't derived from that system. I'm not a mind reader, so how was I to work out that you'd arrived at that balance by dint of completely having failed to remember the history of the competition.

"Again, I was the one suggesting that, but you didn't like the outcome of that."

I have no issues with the outcome of that, I had an issue with a completely random allocation of teams that you plucked out of thin air.

Interestingly its you who now seem to be renouncing the UEFA style points system, because you don't like the outcome of reducing URC representation.

"4 teams for Top14, URC and Prem, 3 teams for other leagues and the last winner, what do you think?"

What about 4 each + 4 to the best performing teams in last years competition not to have otherwise qualified? Or what about a UEFA style system where places are allocated to leagues on the basis of their performance in previous years' competitions?

There's no point including Black Lion if they're just going to get whitewashed every year, which I think would be a possibility. At most I'd support 1 team from the Rugby Europe Super Cup, or the Russian Championship being included. Maybe the best placed non-Israeli team and the Russian winners could play off every year for the spot? But honestly I think its best if they stay limited to the Challenge Cup for now.
