Cheika to stick with Moore as Wallabies captain

Michael Cheika has confirmed that Stephen Moore will remain Australia captain for the June Tests

Moore’s place in the Wallabies side has been called into question, with Tolu Latu and Tatafu Polota-Nau staking their claims to replace the experienced Reds hooker.

But Australia head coach Cheika said the 34-year-old will still be the man to lead his country when they face Fiji, Scotland and Italy next month.

“Moorey’s going to be the captain, for sure,” he said.

“I think Moore’s playing quite well to be honest. His thing’s leadership, being aggressive, that’s what I want from him.

“He’s been very abrasive in there [for Reds], getting stuck in – he’s been playing a lot of minutes too for one of the older guys in the roster but he’s doing it quite well.”

Moore joined Keven Mealamu as the second most capped player in Super Rugby history when he ran out for the 175th time in Reds’ clash with Western Force on Friday.

Havilli has been great, Chay Fihaki starting to really find his feet at this level.

Blues seemed quite happy to let the Crusaders have 15-20m of space to play around with for as long as they liked before the defence closed.

It’s a pretty young forward pack they put out too, got well beaten to the punch at critical times.

I thought it was a mistake to start Chay Fihaki over Macca Springer after Springer’s 5 try performance. Fihaki played very well as did Springer when he came on in the second half. Both have very good kicking games for wings in addition to pace.

Come off it mate, been a critic of him being inconsistent myself, but this year he’s been one of the Crusaders best. His passing game has been elite, his kicking on point and he’s making decent inroads with his carry. Who knows if he can make it work in the Int game, but he’s had a cracker Super so far

Player ratings: Which England players impressed against Italy?

Sing - 6 out of 10, kicked some conversions and plodded down the wing a couple of times. Muir 8 out of 10, made a number of piercing runs and part of a dominant front row. Clifford 7.5 out of 10, effective around the park and scrummaged well. Venner - 6 out of 10, easy try but failed to convert other opportunities that Kildunne, Dow, Breach, MacDonald and Millie David would have eaten for breakfast. Shekells 7.5 out of 10, looked a very promising prospect at number 12. Perhaps I watched a different game?

One good performance shouldn’t change the fact he hasn’t been consistent. Sure they beat broken down blues team who’s bottom of table for a reason.

Red Roses take home bonus point despite disappointing second half against Italy

It will be interesting to see in the future whether any tries scored soon after a scrum are chalked off by the TMO for a crooked scrum feed. Takeaways for me, other than an extremely mediocre 2nd half, were that Sing has only one advantage over EK and that is her place kicking. When she did get a run down the wing it was at Maher's funereal pace. Millie David is a better finisher than Venner and should be in the squad instead. Shekell looked a very likely understudy if not equivalent to Heard. Marlie Packer not a starter anymore.
