Copeland signs for Connacht

Robin Copeland spent four seasons with Munster.

Connacht Rugby have signed back row Robin Copeland from Munster on a two-year contract.

He will join the province at the end of the current season.

Copeland has made over 60 appearances for Munster during four seasons with the club and previously played over 50 times with the Cardiff Blues.

At international level, Copeland was capped for Ireland when he made his debut against Georgia in November 2014.

The back row has also represented the Irish Wolfhounds and Emerging Ireland sides.

“I have really enjoyed my four seasons with Munster and I would really like to thank everyone for my time there. I am now looking forward to the next challenge and an exciting future with Connacht”, Copeland said.

“I have been really impressed with what has been achieved in Connacht and I am determined to be part of further success there. The club is well known for the importance it places on community and I look forward to representing them when I join up with the squad next season.”

Welcoming the signing of Robin Copeland, CEO of Connacht Rugby Willie Ruane said: “Robin is a player we have had on our radar for quite a while and we are delighted to have secured his signing ahead of the 2018/19 season.”

“Robin brings incredible athletic ability and rugby experience to our squad and he will be a valuable player for us as we target further success in the season ahead. We are confident that he will be a great addition to Connacht both on and off the field.”

Not the answer the gentlemen of the press would like to hear, but it is simply that so few black men played the sport until about 15 years ago. Football has a far higher percentage of black players, so where are all the black goalkeepers in the England team?

Perhaps you have overlooked the fact that Ulster’s home stadium is owned by the UK Government so they have to get their government funding from Westminster unlike the other Irish clubs who get a lot of their funding from Dublin. Ireland,, as far as I can tell, is the only international team that has players funded from another country.

I am not qualified to explain player representation by race, colour or creed. I don’t like the inference that there is ‘downright discrimination’ in the game. Any player that wants to play rugby regardless of their colour, class or religion has always been welcomed in my experience.

Ulster is comfortably the second most populous province in Ireland. They have a large fanbase and their stadium holds just over 300 less than Leinsters, so there is no reason for their budget to be so much lower than Leinsters. They were the first Irish team to win the European cup but for whwtever reason(mismanagement, lack of ambition?) they did not progress as they perhaps could or should have done. They traditionally produced good backs but not so much forwards(like Leinster back in the day,Munster fans always called us the ladyboys). I am happy to say that they have started to remedy that now and are producing some young and very talented forwards(McCann, Izucuhkwu and McNabney to name 3). I hope that they and the other 2 Provinces improve enough to challenge Leinster in the coming seasons as the better all 4Ps are the better Ireland will be.

“Even if it’s a weakened side, that by no means guarantees they’ll be a walkover.” Be interesting to see if the side they send has players who step up into the French side in the next year, as with players like Jelonch and Woki from the “weak” team that came out to Australia.

No question there are weak teams in there, Hht. And yes, some real blowout results, but that can be due to fielding weak teams.

What I am saying is that the top teams, such as Leinster, Toulouse,Bordeaux, and then on their day Bath, Leicester, Saracens, and Bristol are in my view stronger than any teams in SR this year. The SA teams should be better, but so far are not.

Maybe some confusion, as I am looking at the URC and European Cups teams, and not the English/UK Premiership.
