Crusaders have confirmed the rumoured signing of Wales legend Leigh Halfpenny.

The 34-year-old British & Irish Lions full-back had played more than 100 matches for Wales and nearly 200 first class matches for professional clubs across Europe.

Head coach Rob Penney described the signing as “a massive coup”.

“Leigh’s a footballer with a huge amount of experience, charisma and skill,” Penney said. “We had our feelers out for a while, and Leigh was finishing up his time with Wales and still had a big desire to play at the highest level, so it’s a great fit for us.

“Leigh adds even more maturity to our backline, while also bringing in some Northern Hemisphere perspective, so yeah, we’re excited about what he’ll bring into camp.”

The Welshman says he’s always followed the Canterbury franchise.

“I’ve always watched Super Rugby and the Crusaders are the team I’ve always followed,” Halfpenny said shortly after signing his one-year contract.

“I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to join one of the best clubs in the world and I can’t wait to meet everyone.

“Rob Penney and his team couldn’t have been any more welcoming and I feel hugely honoured to be joining them.

“I’ve always loved the time I’ve spent in New Zealand on tour. It’s a passionate rugby nation and I’ve always been made to feel very much at home there. My family and I are very excited about the move.”

Now we are signing washed up internationals like Europe?

Halfpenny was a great, he is the marketing dream but will be another Cipriani.

Will Jordan is the Crusaders’ fullback & will likely be Razor’s fullback too. Halfpenny will probably fill a wing/fullback role rather than a fullback/wing role. I also suspect his goalkicking prowess will be a weapon.

I see he’s taking on a coaching role too, yet to be clarified but will likely involve the backfield, maybe goalkicking, attack kicking, etc? With Fergus Burke out, our new young #10s will no doubt also benefit from Halfpenny’s input.

With one & a half pennies now locked in, I’m betting on a Crusaders’ 8-peat.

Didnt realise the Crusaders had a senior citizen team aka Silver Crusaders

Actually, I saw three walking frames being dropped off at Rugby Park last week. And what looked like a box of red & black adult nappies. I could be wrong though.

Not Silverado but Silveraders?

Interesting development.

Genuine question.

Why would a New Zealand team need to import/contract players from abroad?

Do you consider . Samoa , Tonga and Fiji as abroad?

Seems like they were talking about a deal before Crusaders lost their first five to injury. They have also recruited Ryan Crotty as well. Matera a few years ago. They have no experienced 10 so not sure if he could fill that role? Great footballer though, wonderful signing.

Strange signing from the Crusaders

Why? Are there no decent 15s in Crusader country to pick? Just another reason I wont bother with SR anymore.

Will Jordan ain't bad. Similar reason why I won't be watching the English prem. Saracens again?

Fihaki has been a few years as Will Jordan’s back up and is solid but hasn’t really set the world of fire. Why settle for just a decent 15 when you could have this guy though?

'Tonyball, ageing warriors and worrying growth' - What the Springboks learned from the Rugby Championship

The Springboks are developing well however there are still concerns over depth at 6,7 and 8. Yes PSDT and Siya had a great championship and Marco and Jasper were excellent but when Jasper was injured there was no good options to replace him at 8 and at 7 even fewer options to replace PSDT. Smith has been excellent from the bench. Franco Mostert is now past it and cant play in the loosies, yes Hanekom and Louw are to come back but they are struggling to stay fit and between them have just a few caps so are hardly experienced campaigners. So the Boks need to find new options fast as I believe Kolisi is waning and is only capable of a good 50-60mins. By the next world cup he will be a bench player at best and PSDT is a monster but he will be 2 years older come 2027 and may not be an 80min player. Paul de Villiers looks good for the Stormers and would love to seem him in the squad. As for Eben he is hardly raging against the dying light. He has been dominated in the collisions this year and struggled at times. Rassie is now pulling him in the 50th minute as he drops of severely after that. I cant see him making the next world cup unless he wraps himself in cotton wool for large parts of the domestic season. DDA and Kriel are also too slow as a combo now. That was obvious in losses to Aus and NZ and more so in the final 20 against Argy in London. Boks have some backup at 12 and 13 though with Willemse, Sacha, Hooker all able to play there but I would like to see Henco Van Vyk given a chance. Front row and backfield look healthy and 9 and 10 have many options. Boks in good shape but would love to see even more youngsters given a chance on this tour.
