Super Rugby Pacific round ten got underway on Friday evening, where wet conditions in Christchurch had a huge impact on a matchup of two long-time rivals.

Two tries either side of halftime and a late clutch penalty from James O’Connor helped the Crusaders squeeze past the Blues, 25-22 in Christchurch.

The Crusaders have now won seven of their last eight encounters against the Blues, showcasing their recent dominance over the Auckland-based franchise. The victory on Friday evening was their second win over the Blues this season, after a 42-19 victory in round six at Eden Park.

It was a dream start for the Crusaders after a Rieko Ioane obstruction allowed the home side to strike first. A superb touch-finder from Taha Kemara put the Crusaders in a solid position, before All Blacks prop Tamaiti Williams barged his way over the try line close to the touchline. Kemara smartly added the extras from the sideline, giving the Crusaders an early 7-0 lead.

The next 15 minutes of the match were spent mostly in the Crusaders 22, where the Blues forwards rolled up their sleeves and went through the middle to try and get some reward. After a couple of penalties against the scrambling Crusaders defence, Blues lock Josh Beehre powered his way over the line. Beauden Barrett added the extras, bringing the scores level at 7-7 after 24 minutes.

In the minutes leading up to halftime, it was the home side that was on the front foot, working hard to break the Blues’ defence. The Blues were pinged at scrum time multiple times late in the first half after Williams got the better of Blues prop Angus Ta’avao.

The Crusaders had two lineout opportunities close to the line, one stopped illegally by the Blues and the other sacked by the Crusaders before in-form midfielder David Havili fired a beautiful looping pass to Will Jordan to go in to score under the posts.

HT: 14-7 to the Crusaders.

The second half started like the first, with the Crusaders putting the Blues under pressure in their 22. A smart lineout move from the Crusaders allowed Christian Lio-Willie to find a gap in the Blues maul defence, forcing his way over the line just after half time. Kemara’s conversion attempt just went wide of the right hand post.

The Blues then spent time in the Crusaders 22, using their strong pick and go game to threaten the home side’s defence. Rob Penney’s Crusaders continued their strong defence, stopping the Blues attack time and time again, forcing the Blues forward pack to make error after error in the Crusaders 22.

Blues blindside flanker Anton Segner managed to win a huge turnover for the Blues, as they were then able to power their way over the line with Hoskins Sotutu bouncing to the outside of the Crusaders defence to score five meters from the posts.

Then out of absolutely no where, Sotutu picked up the ball from the base of the ruck and threw an outrageous pass behind the back to AJ Lam, who was able to fend off one defender and score just in from the sideline. Barrett’s sideline conversion just missed the post, keeping the scores level at 19-19.

Replacement Blues prop Mason Tupaea managed to get himself over the Ball in Crusaders territory, winning a cruical penalty. The Blues opted for the three, with Barrett easily knocking over the penalty.

A huge scrum from All Blacks prop Fletcher Newell won the Crusaders a penalty from 30 meters out right in front, before replacement Crusaders playmaker James O’Connor successfully kicked the penalty to level the scores once again.

The final 10 minutes of action was a battle of territory where there were multiple in play kicks from both teams. The Blues crumbled under the pressure with Ioane dropping the ball inside his own half. The resulting scrum was dominated by the Crusaders, giving O’Connor the opportunity to ice the game.

The 63-Test Wallabies veteran was cool, calm and collected in the final moment, slotting the penalty straight down the middle.

FT: 25-22 to the Crusaders.

As I’ve said elsewhere, the ref had too much influence in this result - the worst mistake was penalising Tuipolotu for his legitimate line-out steal right on half-time, which led directly to a seven pointer. But there were others, including the penalty against Tele’a when it was Cody Taylor who interfered with the catcher. The Saders props got them home - a worrying trend for other Kiwi teams like the Highlanders, who have lost a couple of games due to a weak scrum. Hopefully, the Crusaders scrum will be able to keep their dominance against scrums with competent props, like the Brumbies and Reds and Canes.

I was skeptical at first, but Infinite Digital Recovery truly came through for me. After losing my money to a scam, I had almost given up. They were honest, didn’t charge anything upfront, and kept me updated the whole time.

I’m grateful for their help and would definitely recommend them to anyone trying to recover lost funds

I was at this game, just relieved the Crusaders won on a yucky night weather wise.50 game Crusader prop Tamaiti Williams and fellow prop Fletcher Newell were immense. Will Jordan and David Havili as captain , continue to impress so much. There commitment and brilliance helped us get over the line. Tough game, gutsy. Crusaders v Blues, what a rivalry.

Just got me YouTube highlights. Great article, looked a good game, total comedy refs.

Enjoyed it but its a bit generous to suggest it’s a rivalry when one team has won 7 of the last 8.

You assess refs from 12 min highlights? Interesting.

Geez that was bad reffing and really gave the Saders the win. I tipped the Saders and dont follow either team but that was Berry at his “red-loving” best. Im sure he thought he was in Brisbane reffing his beloved REDS side.

It's just Jacko with his regular anti Crusaders rant. And it always includes a dig at the ref for his pro Crusaders bias.

But we have to be sympathetic as his team haven't won a title for 12 years.

What a load of crap.

Agree with this.

Lost count of the number of times the Crusaders were offside on their goal line.

In every over game defenders have been penalized and carded for having a toe not behind the try line when the opposition is in control of the ball and on the line - until tonight, the Crusaders had entire bodies and both feet over the goal line when defending and nothing from the officials!

Good luck if you get away with it but hardly consistent.

To balance that up not a great performance from Reiko, started poorly with a needless penalty and finished the same when giving up that turnover that led to the final scrum you would expect much better from a world class player and gutting for the players who turned the ball over in the 80th minute and should have had the Blues back down on the Crusaders line .

Blues have a huge mental block when playing the Crusaders and seriously need to address this.

Joe Schmidt 'a little bit intimidated' ahead of brutal 12-game Wallabies run

I flagged this issue before.

It is not just the danger of facing a big team in the round of 16: you might also get one of them in your pool. That would be two extra massive matches. No team in that scenario is winning any world cup. Its as simple as that.

Currently Argentina are 5th, England 6th, Scotland 7th and Australia 8th. With a spread of 3.5 ranking points between those 4.

Playing SA first is not bad as it means losing points at the right time. They must beat Argentina twice in subsequent matches and will gain more there. They have England away and may need to win that and another high value win over: NZ in Perth, Ireland in Dublin or France in Paris will certainly help.

Some sympathy for 7th placed Scotland is required. Scotland were eliminated in Pool stage in 2019 and as rankings were frozen at end of RWC 2019 for RWC 2023 draw, Scotland were ranked 9th. They made massive progress to be ranked 5th before 2023 but it didn’t count and they were drawn in their group of death with Ireland and SA and more or less eliminated by the draw. Compare with England who were terrible between world cups but were top 4 ranked in 2019 which gave them a quarter final against Fiji in 2023 to make a semi final.

The swing in ranking points between Scotland to England before and after RWC 2023 was a massive 6.5

Scotland should be sitting comfortably in 5th but are now 7th and will struggle to make top6. If they don’t make top 6 and get an unlucky draw they could be out at the last 16 stage. In other words the farcical draw in 2023 means that Scotland are still being punished for their showing in RWC 2019 and this may last at least until 2027.

I hope for Justice sakes they make the top 6.

'Rugby is kind of at a junction here': Henry Pollock on rugby values

I never said that you can’t have an opinion, please go back and read carefully what I have said. I disagree with your opinion, as I disagree with your response. Again, and I emphasise this point, I do not equate Pollock’s actions with abuse and humiliation. You’re using very strong words and I cannot see his actions being humiliating or abusive. Now if he called him names and told him to go the f*** back home, then that’s a different story. But he didn’t, he just gave a celebration like many players around the world do.

Of course, there is the slippery slope argument - which is fair, there can and probabl should be be limits on what a player should be able to do. But winding people up? That’s sport. It always has been and always will be - emotions can and will be manipulated. If we can’t do that, then it’s not sport. It’s called gaining a psychological edge. We are all well aware of the dark arts of rugby and it’s an accepted part of the game. There is no reason a celebration cannot be either.

My belief is that you’re immediately going to a worst case scenario and trying to nip this behaviour in the bud, which is unnecessary. He’s having fun and kids look up to that. Combine that with the respect that the vast majority of professional rugby players show, and you have a winning formula. See my original comment regarding him getting his ass handed to him at some stage or another. Maybe even this very weekend. But to say that Pollock is abusive and humiliating? Calm down, he’s just a talented kid having a good time.
