Cubelli needs knee surgery in blow to Brumbies

Brumbies scrum-half Tomas Cubelli

Brumbies have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the Super Rugby season, with scrum-half Tomas Cubelli needing surgery after rupturing a tendon in his knee.

The Argentina international suffered the injury during a trial match against Waratahs in New South Wales on Saturday.

Cubelli ruptured his patellar tendon in the first half of Brumbies’ 53-17 loss, the severity of the injury confirmed in Sydney on Monday.

Brumbies said the 27-year-old would undergo surgery on Tuesday and “will miss the start of the Super Rugby season as he begins his recovery”.

Crusaders are the opponents for Brumbies in their season opener on February 25.

Agree but look at AWJ, who was out then back, albeit by sidestepping surgery. I can’t recall a Lions squad being announced with open slots previously so there is clearly something afoot!


If it’s not OF/CD then the only other reason I’ve come up with is that AF sees certain players as a ‘dual risk’, i.e. it would need two to replace them, so players such as Marcus or Tadgh?


It would not surprise me at all if these places were ultimately there for OF & CD though, one is his son and the other will be his WC captain. There are no greater vested interests for a coach…

Clinical and surgical performance by the Chiefs in the home of the champion dynasty. What a brilliant game. Crusaders were great in the first half with excellent defence and strategy, and the Chiefs absolutely steamrolled the second half.

The two points are true but not necessarily connected. The law of averages says England were due to catch a break and vs France and Scotland, they really did. That doesn’t make them the better team though, since they patently weren’t but it did provide a necessary confidence boost and this was clear when they kicked on vs the teams that finished 5th and 6th overall.

Even as a Chiefs fan..that surprised me after last week. The forwards just muscled up big time in the second half and really dominated a whole bunch of ABs.Also I think the Saders were really unnerved losing Jordan.

At his best James a very good player, and none other than Rassie has paid tribute to his lineout D. But he seems to be slipping in and out of Leinster top XV more often now, what with RG and the young boy Mangan around. He was closer to his peak in 2021 than he is now.

Nobody really knows how good Aussie will be. There was a lot of relief in the country that they finished 2-2 in November and it did represent improvement. But how much?


Will they pick Skelton? Will Tupou get back in time? Will Jorgo and JAS be fit? Lots of unknowns.

George was good in the 6N off the bench, and those last five or six players in the squad play a vital role in pulling the squad together. Both Jamei and Courtney could do it easily.

They were awful against Scotland and should have lost that game and France will be kicking themselves that they haven’t a grand slam by murdering countless opportunities. They should have got trounced there as well. They looked good against Wales and Scotland but that isn’t a good barometer. They have the players but not the coaching staff to implement the correct game plan or be able to consistently get them to make correct on field decisions.

He has been injured to be fair to him, alot of the season. When fit he generally has been starting ahead of RG, with Synman having great effect from the bench. Leinster looked a better outfit when he was starting. Excellent all rounder.

The difference here is they’ll have the pick of the home nations in the back line in particular. Along with some serious back row selections. Doris at 8 is a miss alright. Fin smith at outhalf directing with JGP has alot of potential. Lets be honest if this was SA or even maybe NZ, you would be concerned but Australia for all their improvements under schmidt are a very average side. I would fancy Scotland to probably beat them on a three legged tour down there. It would be tight though.

Not to be that guy, but this piece says 15 Irish in 37 is the highest proportion since the WWII, despite the fact that the last time the Lions toured Australia there were 15 welsh in the initial 37 player squad (this can change with injuries)


Kinda goes to show the often cyclical nature of these things, Wales were the best team then, Ireland won the Triple crown now, England dominated 01, and Scotand had 9 players in 89 more than Welsh or Irish.


Context is always important.

The Irish media are not the only rugby body with double standards and by no means the worst. Some of our home grown scribes are pretty one eyed and two faced if you get the mixture 😆. When it comes to keeping old values and the spirit of the game the entire rugby world with a few exceptions have moved a long way away from the game played as hard as possible between off the field friends.
