Garces brandishes a red card

South Africa and New Zealand played out one of the best Test matches of the year today, but one decision in the 76th minute sticks in the craw.

Damian de Allende follows through on an attempted charge down and clatters into Lima Sopoaga. Somehow, even after having viewed the TMO footage, Garces adjudges that he punched Sopoaga in the face.

A genuinely head-scratching decision from Garces.

No I don’t think it was that they had to commit, since then suffocating defenses have just learned ways to get away with not committing.

Even then there was no benefit from a ruck, you simply won the ball back or lost it. Back in the rucking days there was a benefit to defending a ruck as you could hold it in, given time to reset, but even if that was a law now you’d see defences learn how to do that with only minimal defenders, leaving more players in the line.

Wow you’ve been coming out with some unclickbaity and reasonable opinion pieces Hamish. Has there been some change or have a couple of errant Springbok kicks just bounced your way?

I think the maul is still seen as a net loss because the defenders gain a free 10 meters as soon as you roll forward.

Well, if we become dominant in the forward play in particular the maul that will change defenses and open up room for our backs. These things are not mutually exclusive. More co-dependent. A multi-tiered armory of templates is what makes champion sides. The ABs from 2010-2016 were able to play several ways. Indeed, many of the great All Black teams were able to do this. I therefore think your article is looking at a multi-dimensional issue in a singular way. The maul being added as a greater weapon will ultimately open space for the backs, as teams bring players in to counter it. Actually, that’s how old school footy was, and why cully and co got space, the forwards had to commit not fan out.

Eddie Jones V1 did this to Australia, and brought about what has felt like a lifetime of loss of players and a pipeline. His ideas as a coach also destroyed our forward focus with stupidity like, scrums don’t matter, just get the lineout over and done with. I don’t think Rassie will leave the same nuked situation in SA, Just look at their U20s team?

Because there is far more money in rugby in the NH. The same thing is happening in cricket. England Australia and India are the only teams that play five test series. the rest one and two tests - three if you’re very lucky. SA are world test cricket champions and are not playing a single home test for 18 months. It’s all about money.
