Davies leads Ospreys to Pro12 summit, boosts international hopes

Sam Davies was behind Dan Biggar during his time at Ospreys

Wales may be enduring a miserable Six Nations, but fly-half Sam Davies had an enjoyable return to club duty on Friday as Ospreys edged to a 13-9 victory over Edinburgh at Myreside and reclaimed top spot in the Pro12 table.

Davies came on as a second-half replacement at Murrayfield last weekend when Wales were beaten 29-13 by Scotland, the visitors’ efforts coming in for plenty of criticism.

Yet having been released to play for Ospreys along with several of his international team-mates, Davies turned in a man-of-the-match performance on his return to Scotland’s capital – a fine run and offload from the 23-year-old setting up the only try of the match for Josh Matavesi.

Davies converted the score and added two penalties during a performance that is likely to boost his chances of gaining more game-time with Wales.

Ospreys now lead Leinster, who host Scarlets on Saturday, by three points. Edinburgh remain ninth, their only points on Friday coming from the boot of Duncan Weir.

Ulster were unable to claim a bonus point and stay fifth after beating Benetton Treviso 19-7 at a sodden Kingspan Stadium, while Connacht thumped Zebre 33-3.
