Emotional Ollie Lawrence issues 46-word message following injury
England midfielder Ollie Lawrence has broken silence on his season-ending injury, posting a 46-word message on social media now that the dust has settled on his country’s win over Italy.
Steve Borthwick’s side pulled clear of the Azzurri in the second half at Allianz Twickenham on Sunday, winning 47-24 to keep alive their Guinness Six Nations title hopes heading into next Saturday’s final round fixture away to Wales.
Lawrence, though, won’t be available after he damaged his achilles just eight minutes into the round four clash with the Italians, ruling him out of the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign with England and Bath.
It will also eliminate him from consideration for selection on the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia, which is a massive setback for the 25-year-old who had become a mainstay of the England midfield, starting all 14 of their most recent matches.
Now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Lawrence posted a message after it was confirmed that uncapped clubmate Max Ojomoh had been called into the England squad in his place for next weekend’s match in Cardiff.
“Lost for words,” Lawrence began. “That’s not how I imagined my season to end! Extremely grateful to have such an amazing partner, family and friends around me to take on this next chapter. Thanks for all the support and messages. The comeback is always greater than the setback.”
Lawrence’s injury came in a fixture where he had a new midfield partner in Fraser Dingwall after starting alongside Henry Slade in 13 consecutive matches since returning to the team in February 2024 against Scotland after missing the opening two rounds of last year’s Six Nations.
