Ex-England international Scarborough lands new role as head coach

Harrogate Rugby Club have confirmed that former England international Dan Scarborough is taking over the role of head coach at the club, succeeding Sam Fox.

After a two-season term, Fox bids adieu to coaching duties while embarking on new coaching endeavours with Pocklington School and the Yorkshire Academy.

The club have expressed both gratitude for Fox’s service and eagerness for his continued involvement as a player for the upcoming 2023/2024 season, where he’ll be aiming to achieve the milestone of 100 caps.

Now Scarborough, a seasoned figure in the rugby world, takes over at the reins at the club.

With an illustrious career that saw him don the jerseys of Leeds Tykes, Racing 92, Saracens, and the England national team, Scarborough brings a wealth of experience and an insider’s perspective on the game.

He retired in 2013, having won two caps for England.

Verdict is still out on him. The great ones tend to get a second wind after the 5 year mark. He needs to prove that still.

He gets a cut at NZ, SA & AUS in a few months so time will tell.

I don’t see Borthers going back to an orthodox back row Neil. He’ll stick with the three sevens as per the 6N with Tom Willis on the bench. As long as the lineout is stable it is a real point of diff for England, along with the 6/2 split.

As a six obv. I’ve only ever thought of TH as a six in a Skelton pack, never as a second row!

Nucifora left Aussie pretty sharpish and went to Scotland. so he must have smelled something he didn’t like…

The coaching [with the exception of defence] and man-management has been excellent. Selection has been poor to moderate.

Andy Farrell left with tough Ireland decisions to make after mixed Lions Tour

The future of test rugby is for squad renewal to be continuous vs episodic. Ireland (and Leinster) know this, and have famously built a pipeline of academy players. But it is not clear that they have been able to introduce the nextgen players to test rugby in a 50-players-per-season Rassie-esque fashion.

The challenge is to develop test experience for a wider squad while still winning consistently. Its hard to do, but building a scalable apprenticeship model at test level can deliver long term continuity, tactical choices, player workload management, and reduced dependency on particular individuals.

Farrell is smart enough to see this happening, but he is under pressure to win games. It will be interesting to see how this develops in Irish rugby.

I watched him kick a penalty at Newlands - not on the Highveld - from on his own ten meter line - and it cleared the crossbar well. And he could drop kick just as far.

Third Test Lions had nothing to play for [not really]. Second Aussie could have won but their D lost it for them.

I don’t think you can say they looked better than they did say, v England [and Wales] last November…

By model I think he means selection from offshore rather than the whole system. As I said above the SA grassroots (& development pathways) are doing a fine job, whereas we have real problems at high school level.

Yes I did watch the U20s, loved the SA backs.
