Griffin signs variation to Bath contract but keeps Wales career alive

Archie Griffin has signed a variation to his Bath contract, keeping the tighthead prop at the Rec for another three seasons.

Unlike a spate of his teammates who have signed new contracts with Bath, the 22-year-old has signed a variation to his contract, which will allow him to continue to represent Wales.
Griffin has been selected by Warren Gatland for Wales Guinness Six Nations campaign, and although he is based outside of Wales, he is eligible to play as he in uncapped.
The Welsh Rugby Union’s selection policy states: “An exception to the rule is call ups for uncapped players currently contracted outside of Wales – to keep their eligibility a newly capped player will be required to return to Wales at the expiration of the contract in place at the point of call up.”
Signing new deal now that he has been called into the Wales squad would render Griffin ineligible to represent Wales as he falls under the 25-cap threshold. This explains why he has only signed a variation to his current deal rather than signing a new deal.
After signing, Griffin said: “This is a very special moment for me and my family and friends. Having come through the Academy here at Bath Rugby to now, the club has made me feel at home since day one and I really can’t wait to see what the future holds.
“I believe we are creating something amazing here and I’m excited to have the opportunity to be a part of that.”

Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan said: “Archie has got a massive future ahead of him. He’s trained so hard for his opportunities and, boy, has he used them this season. I remember the game that he came on against Saracens away, he showed that he can become a very big player for Bath in the future. A young tighthead and he’s fitted into the group so well and specifically being chosen for Wales now, I am very happy that ‘Griff’ will be staying at Bath.”
