Hamstring problem rules Lion out of Ireland’s game with Wales

Ireland second-row Iain Henderson has been ruled out of their Guinness Six Nations trip to Wales and skipper Caelan Doris is a major doubt for the Cardiff clash.

Henderson (hamstring) and fellow Ulster lock forward Cormac Izuchukwu (ankle) will both be absent on Saturday as Ireland seek to win the Triple Crown after victories over England and Scotland.

Doris is in a race against time to be fit after sustaining a knee injury against Scotland in Edinburgh.

“Gavin Coombes, John Hodnett, Diarmuid Mangan, Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale and Nick Timoney have all been added to the squad, with Iain Henderson (hamstring) and Cormac Izuchukwu (ankle) unavailable due to injury,” said an Ireland squad update published on Sunday.

“The Ulster duo will remain with their province to recover and commence their rehabilitation programmes.

“The workloads of Caelan Doris (knee) and Ronan Kelleher (neck) are being managed this week.

“Tadhg Furlong is continuing to make progress and both Mack Hansen and Joe McCarthy are back training with the squad.”

Craig Casey will join the Ireland camp this week in his recovery from injury.

Interim head coach Simon Easterby will name his squad to play Wales on Thursday.

Good to see Hodnett and Coombes added to the squad. The latter has been overlooked too long by Ireland. Hodnett is an emerging talent. Unlikely thpugh he will get a cap this year.

Coombes is lethal from close range. He rarely gets held up. While the overall performance against Scotland was good, the efficiency in the 22 wasn’t.

There may be a lot of chances again this weekend. Ireland need to win first of all, but if that looks on, then they need to score a lot of tries and points to cover any potential loss to France.

Rugby down under could have hit high gear with Anzac Tests

Fantastic idea to fix your annual showpiece fixture (from the Wallabies perspective) to a national holiday. Look at the success this has had in the USA, where NBA and NFL fans pack multiple arenas across the country on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving, the two most widely-celebrated national holidays in North America, with millions more tuning in on TV. This allows fans to create an association between the holiday and the game, while the ANZAC Day example has the added benefit of the same two teams (who are already established historical and geographical rivals) playing each year, adding to the sense of tradition and deepening the rivalry with each iteration.

Would love to see this more widely-implemented across rugby. For instance, Ireland should seek to tie the opening fixture of the Women’s Six Nations to St. Patrick’s Day and host the game in the RDS with the Leinster Schools Senior Cup Final serving as an opener (bonus points if you make the opponent England every year). Would pack out the stadium and the School’s final fans always bring fantastic atmosphere!
