Hanson, Stirzaker among four Rebels re-signings

Melbourne Rebels hooker James Hanson

Melbourne Rebels hooker James Hanson and captain Nic Stirzaker are among four re-signings for the Super Rugby team.

Stirzaker and Hanson signed on for the 2018 season along with Steve Cummins and Fereti Sa’aga, the Rebels announced on Monday.

The news comes despite uncertainty over the Rebels’ future, with the club facing the axe from Super Rugby.

“Our squad for 2018 and beyond continues to take shape with four highly respected and quality individuals who will contribute to the Melbourne Rebels,” Rebels CEO Baden Stephenson said.

“Nic, James, Steve and Fereti have all significantly contributed positively to the club on and off the field during a challenging season.”

Hanson’s re-signing is the most notable for the Rebels, with the former Queensland Red having played for the Wallabies 12 times.

The Rebels have won just one of 13 matches this Super Rugby season to be bottom of the Australian Conference.

Interesting that there’s apparently two open places still to be selected for the squad if required, whatever that means. I guess one could be held open for Jack Willis when he’s finished with Toulouse but that doesn’t stack up with Kinghorn’s selection. The only other possibility I could think of is that they’re being held for two players who are currently injured and have uncertain return timelines, namely faz junior and Doris. Now wouldn’t that set the cat among the pigeons?

Ethan Blackadder made 26 tackles 3 weeks ago here in CHCH against the Blues. He has been in great form for the Crusaders. I am hopeful that Razor retains faith in him. On tackle count you could not go passed fellow Crusader Tom Christie , his stats were great v the Highlanders were great. David Havili has taken his game to a new level since becoming the Crusaders captain.He should be in the All Blacks as well.

Speed isn’t what Farrell looks for in a winger. He likes an 11 with a big left boot (Lowe & Daly) and a 14 who can step into the line as a distributor (Hansen & Freeman). Duhan van der Merwe isn’t a Farrell style player but is too good to ignore. Graham isn’t quite that level.
