Hurricanes' backs in All Black contention because of what 'Rieko is not getting' at the Blues

The Hurricanes win over the Brumbies, the first by a New Zealand side on Australian soil, came after the return of a handful of key players to the Hurricanes.

Billy Proctor, recently re-signed to the end of 2027, and Riley Higgins, have bolstered the Hurricanes midfield which has immediately lifted the guys around them.

Sky Sport commentator Tony Johnson said that Proctor’s chances of starting for the All Blacks will increase if he continues this form with Rieko Ioane not firing in a struggling Blues team.

“They just create that little bit of time and space for Roigard, then he runs the game,” Johnson told the DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin.

“He creates things, you know, he keeps their opposition guessing all the time. Ruben Love is playing really well in the in the 10 jersey.”

The Hurricanes current halves of Cam Roigard and Ruben Love are the most productive in the competition when it comes to try involvements.

Roigard leads the entire competition with 13 while Love has eight (ranked ninth overall) for a combination of 21. The next best halves pairing have 13, set by the Chiefs’ Damian McKenzie and Cortez Ratima.

“But I thought the key to it was that that midfield fulcrum, and firstly, Billy Proctor,” he continued.

“Lots of talk about Billy, and if he keeps playing that way, then he’s putting up a compelling case to have that All Black number 13 jersey for the test against France, because he is getting that little bit of time and space that Rieko Ioane is not getting at the Blues at the moment.”

Proctor finished with two line breaks and a try against the Brumbies but more importantly, both wings and starting fullback Callum Harkin also finished with two line breaks each for a total of eight for the outside backs.

The outside centre also logged double digits with 10 defenders beaten. That one game has bettered Rieko Ioane’s entire season output of seven.

The key to Proctor getting time on the ball according to Johnson was Riley Higgins, one of the most prolific offloaders in the country at No.12.

“But I think for him to function like that, a lot depends on what’s going on inside him. And don’t underestimate the importance of the return of Riley Higgins,” he said.

“I really rate this guy. He’s big, he’s strong, but he just as well as using that well, he created that little bit of time and space for the guys outside him.

“And when they bring that back three into play, those sweeping back line movements, they can make simple look fantastic, but they also can just create mayhem.”

The biggest beneficiary of that in Canberra was left wing Kini Naholo who Johnson described as ‘unstoppable’. He finished with two tries and 123 running metres on the night.

“We know there are a lot of things they like about Caleb Clarke for that All Black left wing spot, particularly his ability to reclaim a kick off,” he said.

“But Kini Naholo for me, he was unstoppable.”

Host Martin Devlin described Naholo as a “bear” for his tackle-breaking ability: “there’s a couple of times there where he was like a bear. They just couldn’t actually get around him, could they? They couldn’t hold him down, and couldn’t he was just wrestling out of tackles.”

“Also looking for work too, and that that’s always something you want to see from from the wingers, and the way he went into that ruck burst away from there, I was thinking, remember [running back] Emmett Smith used to play for the Dallas Cowboys?”

“That to me was the standout result.”

As an aside …. Hands up who was appalled by the lack of action in the way of no red card against the Brumbies player trying to knock out Ruben Love with his shoulder in the 56th minute of the Canes/Brumbies match ? That was just disgraceful refereeing IMO https://share.icloud.com/photos/049-EbyGEG5RukZaz2DmjJBsw

If and when selected the proof will be in the pudding when Proctor face’s the formidable Springbok midfield the tough English and of course the French in saying that Razors inside selection will help immensely can’t wait

TJ is dreaming if he thinks Proctors form will land him a start against France.

Razor showed little interest in giving him any real game-time last year, so it’ll be the usual safety-first approach and sticking with Rieko.

Not against a French B-team that they are going to mince this year in Eden Park.

The Canes backs had a big part to play in their win over the Brumbies but I would hesitate over anointing Proctor as the heir apparent on the strength of one game. Still needs a bit more match play yet despite his obvious talent. Ioane is largely deprived of chances with the Blues but is still the incumbent centre for the ABs who hopefully provide their outside backs with more ball.

That would be why (however) was quoted (as saying) “if he keeps playing like this”.

Ioane has been the starting 13 for the All Blacks since 2020. That is 5 test seasons to demonstrate he has the distribution skills required to feed his outside backs. However, Ioane has proven he cannot.

Devlin is such a random rambler. Would be great over a beer I reckon though.

Leinster cleanse palette with record URC scoreline against Zebre

My name is Solenn Bonnet, and I am a single mother navigating the challenges of raising my two-year-old child while trying to make ends meet. I came across a trading platform that promised astonishing daily profits of 18%. The allure of such a high return on investment was too tempting to resist, and I found myself drawn into cryptocurrency trading. Excited by the prospect of financial freedom, I invested a significant amount of my savings, totaling over 5.7 BTC. However, what started as a hopeful venture quickly turned into a nightmare. The platform was a scam, and I lost everything I had invested. The emotional toll of this loss was immense; I felt devastated and helpless, struggling to provide for my child and keep up with my bills. In my desperate attempt to recover my funds, I sought help from various recovery experts. Unfortunately, I encountered numerous fraudulent individuals who claimed they could help me retrieve my lost money. Each time I reached out, I was met with disappointment and further scams, which only deepened my despair. Last year was one of the most challenging periods of my life, filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my financial future. Feeling overwhelmed and at a loss, I confided in a close friend from church about my situation. She listened compassionately and shared her own experiences with financial difficulties. Understanding my plight, she introduced me to Tech Cyber Force Recovery, a group of skilled hackers known for their expertise in recovering lost funds. Skeptical yet hopeful, I decided to reach out to them as a last resort. Their services came at a higher cost, but my friend generously offered to help me with a partial payment. I was amazed by how quickly they responded and began the recovery process. Their team was professional, efficient, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire ordeal. To my relief, they successfully recovered more than I had lost to those heartless scammers. This was truly transformative, and I felt a sense of relief and gratitude that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I strongly encourage anyone who has faced similar challenges or fallen victim to scams to reach out to Tech Cyber Force Recovery. If you’ve invested in a fraudulent platform like I did, they are highly capable of helping you reclaim your hard-earned money. Don’t lose hope; there is a way to recover what you’ve lost.
