Ireland hand first starts to Tracy and Treadwell

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt

James Tracy and Kieran Treadwell have been handed maiden starts for Ireland’s second Test against Japan on Saturday.

Leinster hooker Tracy and Ulster lock Treadwell are two of six changes made by coach Joe Schmidt from last week’s 50-22 victory over the hosts.

Devin Toner is primed to make his 50th international appearance in Tokyo, while Cian Healy will clock up his 70th.

John Cooney could make his debut after the scrum-half was named among the replacements.

A quartet of players – Andrew Conway, Rory Scannell, Luke McGrath and Dan Leavy – earned their first starts in the opening contest.

Ireland XV: Andrew Conway, Keith Earls, Garry Ringrose, Luke Marshall, Jacob Stockdale, Paddy Jackson, Kieran Marmion; Cian Healy, James Tracy, John Ryan, Kieran Treadwell, Devin Toner, Rhys Ruddock, Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan.

Replacements: Niall Scannell, Dave Kilcoyne, Andrew Porter, James Ryan, Sean Reidy, John Cooney, Rory Scannell, Tiernan O’Halloran.

I don't get how anyone can be so myopic as to think highlighting issues to the ref before the game (which is ever coach’s prerogative) is the same as releasing a video on the internet publicly lambasting a referee.

Poorfour has explained this perfectly. Borthwick won't be banned, because he's done absolutely nothing contrary to the laws or spirit of the game.

Freeman is wasted at 13. Doesn’t do what Ollie Lawrence can do. 13 isn’t an aerial position (which is all Freeman has over Lawrence) it’s a speed, power & offload one. That’s why Lawrence is an outstanding 13. Freeman is a killer finisher. But his power and offload game can’t match. Wonder if he’d be better suited to 15 - if not on the wing.

Dingwall did look sluggish, but I’d stick with him. I think Seb Atkinson will eventually take the 12 shirt though. Ford is classy, but doesn’t quite hold it together in other areas of the game. F.Smith should definitely be given 10 shirt permanently to build his experience up. M.Smith should be 23. I want to see Raffi Quirke off the bench ahead of Spencer.

I couldn't watch the game but sounds like it was the same old story. England good at doing England things and lacking in other departments.

I don't get why we persist on not playing multiphase rugby. That is how good sides win rugby matches, they build pressure in the opposition half. England go two, three phases and kick. It's really bizarre. None of the best teams in the world play like this, they have a much more balanced game plan. England's best win under Borthwick was when we turned over Ireland by counter attacking, hitting the line with speed and moving the ball to the wing.

Forward play is so much more than having lineouts in the right area, in modern rugby it’s much more about collisions all over the pitch, both offensive and defensive. If the forwards win the gain line then whoever is at 10 has a much easier job to direct the team around the field.

All three fly halves have their strengths and weaknesses you say ‘Marcus has an inferior tactical kicking game to Ford,’ but you could equally say Ford has an inferior running game to M Smith’ and neither are as physical in the tackle as F Smith. If Borthwick continues to build what is beginning to be a promising bunch of forwards then I would have confidence in any of the 3 FH's.

The ref didn't help - calling marginal throws crooked, affecting the throwers confidence! Then watching the Irish 9 put the ball under the locks feet! Lineout skills are harder than rolling the ball into the scrum!

To be honest HH, I also thought the Aussie’s would win. I worried there would be a lack of power with ENG (which there was) but they also scored 2 fortunate tries that offset things. I think the victory flattered, although the real comparison was when the bench came on and they were much better in those final 30 mins, which will likely be the starting test team going forward.

I agree, he's a very intelligent rugby player who doesn't do a lot wrong. I don't think that's enough for international rugby though, I can't think of any centres from recent successful sides I'd describe in that manner. Look around the game at the top sides over recent years: Barrett, Ioane, De Allende, Kriel, Esterhuizen, Aki, Henshaw, Ringrose, Danty, Fickou. You need centres who can impose themselves on a test match.

The only thing which makes Dingwall a somewhat reasonable pick is Smith, Freeman, Mitchell but if he's picking Ford then I don't get it at all.

I can tell you it felt a little underwhelming JW.

We played well and were efficient in getting the W . . . . But crikey it was dull to watch. We went back to 2023/4 playing style, where our most used attacking move is to hoist the ball in the air and compete at the breakdown to get it back, whereas we have beautiful runners like IF-W who got mentioned during the line up and about twice in the game.

Will Jordan a 5? You must be mad. Jordan is classy and super intelligent - not all about flash. Tupaea / Fanga’anuku partnership looked fire. Jordie is also a smart player, but he just don’t bring any real threat - ever. I love Beauden, always will. Looked good with all three, Jordan and Dmac all playmakers on the field. (I’m not Kiwi btw). AB have been missing an explosive centre partnership. Keep the playmakers! Carter is a bruiser. Really like him on the wing. As with Clarke. Nice to see better form from Sattiti.

ENG were clinical to get the win . . . . But it was a bit dull to watch.

When your main attacking strike move is to hoist the ball up and try and win it back at the breakdown, it’s not exactly easy on the eyes over 80 mins.

Jean Luc du Preez said the same thing to Sale, hence why they stopped playing him at 5 but then he struggled for games and left, so it’s a delicate balance when you limit your positions in the modern era.

What did you make of that NB? Very workmanlike from both sides and NZ just nudged the tight exchanges but I thought LF carried well in the back line but then they didn’t really get the ball to the wingers that much as a result.

Old fashioned, gritty style of test match, which NZ deservedly won but was hard to jusge how that compares as a result.

Ireland aren’t a bad scrum and it looked better when Williams came on and Furlong tired. ENG will be a good test as they potentially have the stronger scrum in the 6 N’s at full strength.

Yeah, most locks don’t hit their peak till their mid-20s. I think Lord’s injury struggles are due to him struggling to adapt after being promoted too soon. Lineouts were a shambles , not helped by a ref who seemed to enforce the laws only periodically

Yep as always ABs fans had to satisfy. I see many positives in the game against a quality team. We made so much play, dominated possession and territory and it paid off in the end when we executed properly. We probably could have scored a couple more tries. A crappy start execution wise but we got into our work.

You predicting a riot? Ireland got enough to win but gonna need a lot to go right and Boks a bit to go wrong with some rub of the green to get it but def more likely is Boks win comfortably maybe even emphatically and that’s not throwing shade Irelands way
