Is Goosen set for Racing return?

Johan Goosen

Johan Goosen may be on the brink of a surprise return to Racing 92, the club he abruptly quit in December 2016, according to reports in the French press.

The 24-year-old South African – who was voted Top 14 player of last season following the Ciel-et-Bleus’ Brennus-winning campaign – suddenly quit Racing, despite earlier signing a contract extension to remain at the club on the fringes of Paris until 2020.

He announced his retirement from the game rather than continue to pick up the reported €40,000 a month that playing rugby in the capital would have earned him , and that he had taken up a position as a commercial director of a stud farm in his native South Africa.

Goosen’s decision prompted an angry reaction from club president Jacky Lorenzetti. “Johan Goosen, whose contract was [extended] less than a year ago, now claims to be able to get rid of it in a fantastic way,” he said in a club statement released at the time of Goosen’s sudden departure – but the club has always maintained that it would welcome him back, and was prepared to discuss any issues.

Now, rugby newspaper Midi Olympique has reported that the player could return to Racing ‘within days’, after realising that it was his only route back into the game.

The report quotes agent Christian Joyard, who handled Goosen’s move to Racing in June 2014: “We have evidence that Johan Goosen is on his way back to France. He just told us, and if it was a normal situation, I would even say [it will happen in] a matter of days.”

But, Joyard warned: “You and I know that the player is unpredictable and is subject … to various forms of pressure [that] could influence his … decision.”

It would be a dramatic turnaround. According to some reports in South Africa, Goosen had previously told friends that he would rather go to prison than play again in Racing colours. If he does head back to Stade Yves du Manoir, he will have a lot of bridges to build.

Jean de Villiers: ‘Next year will be the acid test for this group’

It seems to me that a core of players will make it to 2027 if they stay fit. Siya, PSD and Eben are all part of that core. The question is who else? De Allende may not make it which is why Rassie has started playing Am at 12 and has Moodie as his back up at 13. Also Esterhuizen is an established 12 already in the mix. Even Pollard has played 12 so Rassie keeping all his options open. Willemse can play 12 but his defence is sometimes lacking. Mgomezulu can also play there and he is a good physical player who makes his tackles. De Allende though is so hard to replace. He tackles, he turns over, runs over players and he distributes. Rassie is making plans for all positions in a similar way. At tighthead and loosehead we have seen the Bok depth this year with injuries to multiple players and yet the scrum stood strong and dominated. At hooker he has used 4 or 5 different players. Bongi will not likely make 2027 but the young guys are coming through. Willie has been tapped as a future coach and right now is a player coach. His swansong will come next year but Fassi is now a solid option at 15 to complement Damian and challenge him. At wing there is endless depth right now. In the loose forwards there are already some established options for 2027 and Louw has now stepped up with Hanekom coming through. At lock injuries to multiple players saw Nortje step up and Moerat is now an established player. Ruan Venter also a good back up and some good youngsters coming through at the Bulls. Springboks finding solutions but question is will this squad be experienced enough come 2027. Lots of change still to come and lots of learnings still to be had for many of these young players.
