The Boks have another RWC and a SR title during this length of time so it’s not hurting their national game. Still seems to be how they judge success.

Their teams had been going well in the URC but tapered off a bit recently. The Bulls don’t really seem to have recovered from bombing that home final to Glasgow.

Obviously their teams are non-starters in the Euro comps which is sad. Just seems unworkable to have an non-European team compete regularly in Europe.

Although, Australia had a crack at one of the recent Eurovision song contests and I think they did well enough. It can be done.

Poorly researched piece that fails to take into account the critical point that it wasn’t possible for SA sides to earn a home ko fixture in the Champions Cup initially, as a result of the entry agreements. The format compounded this with ko rounds over sequential weeks, leaving the Bok teams scrambling logistically at incredibly short notice, but that will hopefully change pretty soon. So overall, the EPCR was stacked against them and as a result, was always going to be a slow burn for bok teams.

As for the URC, they’ve contested the last three finals and won one of them. Not too shabby at all from a standing start!

He’s playing pretty good, has some good experience on him, and playing out of position his stats are pretty much identical to Chay Fihaki’s. I don’t have kicking meters though, and maybe Fihaki also looks more like a midfielder than wing, if he could turn around his defence (pretty much the worst tackle% of any winger I look at).

Not sure that's true. Looking at the Wikipedia entry for capped Springbok players, 10 were capped in 2024, while 12 were capped in 2022.

Admittedly, only 6 in 2021 and 2 in 2023, but those were B&I Lions tour and RWC years, respectively, when the focus was on winning big tournaments rather than expanding squad depth.

As for the quality of new caps, 2024 saw some promising talent being unearthed. Bit disingenuous to say that none of the new players are likely to become regular starters.

School Rugby in SA is extremely strong. There are at least 15-20 schools playing at the top level in at least 6 provinces and the remaining 3 provinces have multiple schools playing at the top level as well. There is a ranking system, Hierarchy, multiple festivals each year, interprovincial school rugby is prevalent, the craven week is one if not the oldest youth development rugby week in world rugby and provincial age group rugby is prevalent right from U13 level. It is one of the most robust schoolboy rugby production systems in the world that hoovers up the top athletes in the country. Add to that the Varsity cup and shield at tertiary level, the club system, SA U20 provincial champs, Currie cup, and other domestic comps and you have a multitiered development system that is on par with the rest. So no it has nothing to do with inequality or one singular school. Success in SA rugby comes from the whole

Great article. Rassie is an incredible coach - and he has a great backroom staff behind him - but it isn’t possible to squeeze water from a stone.

He won back to back world cups with a pretty much unchanged group of players. He won’t be able to do that again.
