Kaino expected to face Lions despite knee surgery

The Blues host the Hurricanes at Eden Park this Friday night.

Jerome Kaino will undergo knee surgery but the New Zealand flanker is expected to be fit to face the British and Irish Lions.

Blues will be without Kaino for up to six weeks after he suffered a slight meniscus tear in his knee during the 28-24 Super Rugby defeat to Hurricanes last weekend.

It is anticipated that the 34-year-old loose forward will be back to full fitness in time for the three-match series against the Lions, which starts at Eden Park on June 24.

Blues assistant coach Steve Jackson said: “He’s got a lot of big things coming up towards June so now was the time to get it done.

“And again, he was feeling it and as I said before it was locking up on him so potentially he could have played with some discomfort then if it locked up during game time we would have to replace him anyway.”

Jackson added: “He’ll get his feet up and normally you come back quick from those sorts of operations. I’m pretty sure he’ll be fine for the Lions tour.”

Maori All Black loose forward Akira Ioane will replace Kaino in the Blues starting line-up when they take on Brumbies in Canberra on Sunday.

Bad execution from Havili for sure, but the space was there. Thought the Crusaders backs tried too hard to use what little attacking ball they got. I like Tupaea, but he needs to distribute better if he going to replace Jordie, not to mention I don’t think i’ve ever seen him kick a ball!

“he jinked and danced a bit” well, that’s what he does , he got them close to the line which is the point. As for his ‘interference’ i assume you mean when he got into the Chiefs passing lanes , whcih again is his job. The first would have been an interception but for the strength of the pass, two hands used so a clear attempt to catch. The second one which I assume you mean the one before Narawas try was the same, preventing a pass is not illegal, only intentionally knocking on is. Carter looked good, but so did fihaki, with a 50/22 then setting up the first try on carter’s wing. The Chiefs backs had far more ball than their opposites so more chances to shine.

Chiefs make championship statement in Christchurch heavyweight bout

I don’t remember the Crusaders winning any scrum penalties. I would have expected them to shade the Chiefs in that area but they didn't. A lot of the early scrums collapsed and BOK played on, although I thought the Chiefs weren't scrumming straight. Crusaders will be most disappointed in their lineout, especially as Lord was on the bench, they lost far too many and a lot of the ball they won was scrappy. Curious why Quinten Strange hasn't been sighted in the team for a while. Not for the first time this season the Crusaders repeatedly failed to exit cleanly when under pressure, their defence is generally good enough to force errors and win back possession, but they immediately give in back to the opposition to start again. The Crusaders didn’t have enough possession in the second half to make anything happen, and the backs panicked forcing errors which the Chiefs took advantage of. Rob Penney and Co need to figure why a forward pack of it’s quality isn’t winning enough possession.

Canada were pretty ordinary against the USA as were NZ against the Wallaroos. The game at the weekend will be interesting as both need to improve, but Canada clearly expect to win. Why do these PAC 4 matches largely get played in Aus and NZ and not North America? Why not home and away. Money again.

Wallaroos hungry for more in search of trans-Tasman competitiveness

This is something I agree with, they have to play more games against the higher ranked nations, NH teams, except Canada and the USA, play between 8 and 10 games a year, sometimes more, and have more time together in camps. Most of them also play in what is considered the strongest women’s league in the world, week in week out, except of course the French women who have their own strong league. The problem is money and largely being so far away from everyone else with the costs involved. The talent is there.

It’s a cycle. Like the Boks 14 win streak under Christie (AFAIK the only international coach with a perfect record including wins over every single one of the Tier 1 nations), the 18 win streak under Mallett followed by their superb kick and chase game spearheaded by Fourie du Preez and Bryan Habana then the wilderness years and finally the Rassie era. Ireland have had golden periods featuring Willie-John, then BOD and most recently Johnny Sextant. It would appear that they play their best with a outstanding world class player round whom they build their game. Who will be next.

Speaking as a Sale fan, that was one frustrating game on Friday. We played some great rugby, but later on kept on dropping the ball and OHC and Pollard both had stormers in the second half. Ford was great for us to, although he missed a couple of kicks.

I was very annoyed when the ref gave them a holding penalty when our 9 didn't get there in the because he had to hurdle one of their players. We should have had a kick to go into the lead.

I was worried that my Chiefs were going to go the same way but things finally clicked. Putting all those All Black forwards on a 6/2 bench has proven very effective too - could be a blueprint for Razor against the likes of France and South Africa.

During my nine months stay in Dublin I visited the RDS ground to watch a Leinster squad training session. I just casually spoke to some people and when they found I was from South Africa their welcome was very gracious especially as Ireland had recently beaten the Boks in the last game played at Lansdowne Road. They were at pains to point out that Ireland had had the rub of the green (which most certainly wasn’t the case). I was so impressed with Irish fans and the players I met in Dublin - knowledgeable and genuine rugby people. I sincerely hope the people on the ground have not changed.

Chiefs' secret weapon again on show in regular season sweep of Crusaders

The Chiefs fully deserved their win over the Crusaders who once again capitulated to them in the second half. It would seem the Saders learnt nothing from their 2nd round debacle. Yes the strength of the Chiefs bench did assist them but the Crusaders also had a strong bench. Other factors which contributed to the turn round was Crusaders complacency just before and just after half time when poor defence let in 3 tries. Poor discipline and the loss of Jordan, their best back, was also a factor. Even so it is still possible, if unlikely, they could still overtake the Chiefs as they still have a game in hand over then but will need to secure 3 wins & 2 try bonus points.

It’s a bit weird isn’t? Suddenly it’s no longer enough to admire Leimster, now you have to venerate them - or worship at the shrine uncritically!

I doubt anyone would seriously argue with 8 or 10 picks from the province [including Doris] but the last three are emtirely debatable - Kelleher, Ryan and Conan.

Esp when you have 100 cappers like Lawes and George as alternatives.
