The Spanish Rugby Federation confirmed on Tuesday that the 32-year-old had succumbed to injuries suffered in a “freak accident”.

Leauma reportedly fell from the terrace at a shopping centre in Leiden just hours after Spain’s 52-7 Six Nations B win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam and was rushed to hospital for surgery.

Leauma had been with the Spanish rugby team but was reportedly a late scratching for their big win due to questions about his eligibility.

“We regret to inform you of the death overnight of Kawa Leauma who suffered a freak accident after Spain’s match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam,” the Spanish Rugby Federation said.

“In accordance with the wishes of his wife, who at this moment in time is travelling towards the Dutch capital, we cannot give out any more information at the moment and ask for maximum respect towards her and her family.”

Auckland-born Leauma played for Spanish club Ordizia.

He had previously represented Samoa Under 20s and played sevens rugby for Auckland.
