Le demi d'ouverture fidjien Caleb Muntz en route pour Provence Rugby ?

L’ouvreur fidjien Caleb Muntz devrait rejoindre Provence Rugby à l’issue de la saison de Super Rugby Pacific. Selon Midi Olympique, le joueur de 25 ans s’apprête à signer un contrat de deux ans avec le club aixois, même si le Stade Français et le Stade Rochelais suivent toujours son dossier.

Formé en Nouvelle-Zélande à la Hamilton Boys’ High School, Muntz évolue depuis quatre saisons avec les Fijian Drua, la franchise fidjienne intégrée au Super Rugby Pacific. Il a connu sa première sélection avec les Fidji en 2023 et a contribué à la victoire historique face à l’Angleterre à Twickenham avant de manquer la Coupe du Monde en raison d’une blessure au genou. De retour en sélection, il a joué un rôle clé dans le sacre fidjien en Pacific Nations Cup l’an dernier et lors de la victoire face au pays de Galles à Cardiff lors de la dernière tournée d’automne.

Si son transfert se concrétise, Muntz deviendra la sixième recrue de Provence pour la saison prochaine. Le club aixois, actuellement troisième de Pro D2, vise une montée en Top 14.

Il viendrait enrichir un effectif riche en joueurs de haut niveau, qui compte déjà George North, Teimana Harrison, Izack Rodda, Ned Hanigan ou plus récemment Kapeli Pifelet. Le club a également annoncé l’arrivée de l’ancien sélectionneur de l’équipe de France Philippe Saint-André en tant que nouveau directeur du rugby pour amener l’amener au plus haut niveau.

Jimmy Gopperth et Jules Plisson sont pour le moment les deux principales options de la Provence pour le poste de demi d’ouverture, mais le Néo-Zélandais devrait prendre sa retraite à l’issue de cette saison, ce qui ouvrirait la voie à la signature de Muntz.
