Leicester Fainga'Anuku va repartir chez les Crusaders

Il reste encore quelques mois, mais une chose est sûre : l’international All Black Leicester Fainga’Anuku va quitter le Rugby Club Toulonnais pour retourner en Nouvelle-Zélande. Le départ devrait intervenir à la fin de la saison 2024/2025.

Selon le club, qui a officialisé la nouvelle par voie de communiqué mercredi 25 au soir, le trois-quarts polyvalent devrait rejoindre les Crusaders et New Zealand Rugby avec qui il s’est engagé jusqu’en 2027.

« Bien que très bien intégré à Toulon, Leicester a motivé sa décision par le fait de pouvoir ainsi postuler à une place dans le squad Néo-Zélandais, dans l’optique de la prochaine Coupe du Monde de rugby », est-il indiqué.

« Ce mercredi matin, Leicester Fainga’Anuku a affirmé à ses coéquipiers sa grande détermination à remporter les plus grands succès avec Toulon avant son départ en juillet prochain. »

La veille, le média néo-zélandais Stuff rappelait que Scott Robertson n’avait pas caché sa frustration lorsque Fainga’anuku avait décidé de partir à la fin de l’année dernière mais qu’il avait été d’emblée convaincu qu’il reviendrait au terme de ses 19 mois de contrat.

Fainga’anuku avait en effet disputé 55 matchs avec les Crusaders sous la direction de Robertson entre 2019 et 2023.

Ainsi, le nouveau coach des All Blacks pourra compter sur lui pour le Rugby Championship 2025, mais les Crusaders devront patienter jusqu’en 2026 pour l’accueillir.

Fainga’anuku faisait partie de l’équipe des All Blacks à la Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2023 en France, bien qu’il n’ait pas été un titulaire indiscutable sous la direction de Ian Foster. Après ses débuts contre l’Irlande en 2022, il n’a obtenu que six autres sélections avant son départ pour la France.

Toutefois, la situation pourrait changer sous la houlette de son ancien coach Scott Robertson, maintenant en charge des All Blacks.
