Heartbreak for Leinster as last-gasp Bulls kick ends perfect record
United Rugby Championship leaders Leinster saw their winning streak ended as they were beaten 21-20 away at South African side Bulls.
Leo Cullen’s men, missing a number of their Ireland Six Nations players, had maintained a perfect record of 16 wins from as many matches across all competitions until Saturday’s last-gasp United Rugby Championship defeat.
Keagan Johannes got the hosts out to an early lead through a penalty before the visitors scored their first try via inside centre Jordie Barrett. Ross Byrne converted, as he later did for Andrew Osborne’s second-half try.
The hosts led 18-17 after a penalty try and one from replacement Johann Grobbelaar but had Sebastian De Kerk sent off in the 74th minute, and Leinster leapt into a 77th-minute lead through Byrne’s second penalty.
But Bulls wrapped up the victory in dramatic style when David Kriel slotted the winning penalty with the last kick of the contest, four minutes beyond the regulation 80.

Very exciting finish. Leinster had a put in leading 20-18. Bulls kept pushing early but the ref said that they could push early all day but the scrum would be reset. I thought it was supposed to be a free kick against now for pushing early? Anyway, it eventually gets set, Bulls push early the ball goes in and they get the shove: penalty and duly converted. That was the sixth scrum penalty in a row for Bulls. Slimani was incredulous that every early shove was being rewarded. The ref also telling Bulls props front row what they needed to do ‘to be rewarded’. WTF? Anyway rant over, Leinster had opportunities to put the match away earlier but couldn’t convert the dominance into scores.
Great grit by Bulls, Leinster will need to up it against Sharks next week. Sharks I guess, rested a few heavies today in their squeeky win over Zebre.
Decent crown in Pretoria and must have been a tense but eventually excitingw atch for the Bulls faithful.
I had an intuition Munster, Leinster, and Connaught would all lose by a score today and Ulster win. I should have put money on it although Ulster winning was badly in doubt!!
I see what you mean about the early push, RW. That final penalty was ludicrous.
Where do you watch the full game ? All I can find is a short Utube highlights piece.
Leinster’s second try shouldn’t have even stood. Doesn’t matter what The Bulls did, as they would’ve won either way.
