Les British & Irish Lions envisagent un détour par les USA en 2029

Lors de la tournée des Lions en Nouvelle-Zélande en 2029, les organisateurs étudient la possibilité de faire une halte aux Etats-Unis, ce qui serait une première historique.

Selon le Telegraph qui révèle l’information, Las Vegas, Chicago ou Los Angeles seraient en mesure d’accueillir un tel match de gala.

Si le projet se réalise, cela donnerait une énorme visibilité au pays qui doit accueillir en 2031 la Coupe du Monde de Rugby Hommes et en 2032 la féminine.

L’idée des Lions de jouer en dehors de leurs lieux traditionnels n’est pas nouvelle, ayant déjà joué en Argentine, au Kenya, en France et même au Canada en 1966.

Une étape stratégique

En 2025, alors que la tournée est prévue en juillet en Australie, les Lions joueront l’Argentine à Dublin.

« Interrompre un long voyage dans un lieu géographique judicieux peut être préférable que de délocaliser l’un des trois tests contre les All Blacks », estime le Telegraph tout en concédant que « c’est dans cinq ans ».

La Nouvelle-Zélande a été pionnière dans l’organisation de matchs de rugby aux États-Unis, jouant contre l’Irlande à Chicago en 2016 et contre les Fidji à San Diego en 2023, avec une nouvelle rencontre contre l’Irlande prévue à Chicago l’année prochaine.

Las Vegas pourrait aussi devenir une destination de rugby à XV, après l’accueil réussi de matchs de rugby à XIII par la NRL australienne et la Super League.

Well it certainly makes for better viewing from here on in. There’s plenty of animosity to share around which was previously reserved solely for England. Ireland need a massive rebuild and I feel it’s too late for the 2027 WC.

State OO is exactly that whereas the Reds v Tahs includes players from either state in the respective team. It could be said that the QRL manipulated the state boundaries to nab a couple of players who became league legends

Everyone knew what Alfie & Wally were going to do and still NSW struggled.This Reds /Tahs game will be a grind until the last 15mins IMO and the respective benches will play a big role.

In the six nations so far Tom Willis has carried 27 times, and Ollie Lawrence has carried 17 times.

Ben Earl has carried 49 times. Marcus Smith 35 times. Freeman 32 times. Mitchell 26 times. Genge 23 times. Tom Curry 22 times. Fin Smith 22 times. Maro Itoje 21 times. Daly 16 times. Stuart 15 times. Cowan-Dickie 15 times. Chessum 14 times.

So yeah, the loss of Englands 4th and 10th most prominent carriers will probably lead to Freeman and the front row carrying a bit more than usual, but its unlikely to have particularly dire consequences for the team. The fact that you dismissed England’s 9th and 14th most prominent carriers - who both weigh about the same as Willis - as lightweight, and the fact that you neglected to mention England’s #1 carrier - who weighs more than Lawrence, really speaks to your in depth knowledge of the team!

Front rowers are specialists. Apart from that, never heard of players being registered as forwards or backs. Otherwise there probably would have been some kind of regulation already.

I’m not a fan of the 6/2, nevermind the 7/1, for more than one reason. But I’m even less a fan of restrictions, especially ones that look like they are tailored for specific teams.

Roebuck, Earl, and both Curry brothers can carry well. Marcus can usually find a few good gaps. But they’re probably planning on still kicking it a ton and putting the other team under pressure with a chance to pilfer in the tackle, gain penalties and play in the right areas of the field.
