The Welsh winger made headlines by switching from rugby union to the NFL last year, joining the Kansas City Chiefs as part of the International Player Pathway Program.

He failed to secure a spot on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster and later moved to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, transitioning from running back to wide receiver.

According to the Daily Mail the Jaguars have now offered Rees-Zammit a new deal after his previous contract expired earlier this month.

The 23-year-old is currently a free agent but could return to Jacksonville if he accepts the offer. Alternatively, the former rugby star is believed to be considering a return to rugby union.

Contrary to popular belief, the 6’2, 95kg flyer could potentially earn more in rugby union, at least when compared to this stage of his burgeoning career in American football.

The Welshman turned down a £600,000 a year offer to play rugby in Japan for Mie Honda prior to his switch to the American code, considerably more than he would make as a non-playing practice squad member of an NFL franchise.

He could still demand a high price should he return to rugby union.

His first year in the NFL has been a steep learning curve. Despite signing with two teams he has yet to make a competitive appearance. A move to wide receiver from running back appears to have suited him but precious little information has emerged from camp since around his development, with the American press having lost interest in the story.

“That first game, my first-ever game of American Football, I didn’t have a very good game,” he told RugbyPass last October after signing for the Jaguars. “When I say it was like going into a different world over there, it genuinely was. Until I show it on the field, I am a nobody at the end of the day compared to these Americans. This is my dream and I’m chasing it, I’ll do what it takes.”

Rees-Zammit is currently on holiday in Thailand and reflected on the past year in a recent social media post. “What a crazy year it’s been! Can’t thank everyone enough for the support I’ve had over the last 12 months. Can’t wait to see what the future holds in 2025.”

He earned 32 caps for Wales between 2020 and 2023, scoring three tries at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, and was a member of the British & Irish Lions squad that toured South Africa in 2021.

Why Les Kiss and Stuart Lancaster can lead Australia to glory

It is now 22 years since Michael Lewis published his groundbreaking treatise on winning against the odds

I’ve never bothered looking at it, though I have seen a move with Clint as a scout/producer. I’ve always just figured it was basic stuff for the age of statistics, is that right?

Following the Moneyball credo, the tailor has to cut his cloth to the material available

This is actually a great example of what I’m thinking of. This concept has abosolutely nothing to do with Moneyball, it is simple being able to realise how skillsets tie together and which ones are really revelant.

It sounds to me now like “moneyball” was just a necessity, it was like scienctest needing to come up with some random experiment to make all the other world scholars believe that Earth was round. The American sporting scene is very unique, I can totally imagine one of it’s problems is rich old owners not wanting to move with the times and understand how the game has changed. Some sort of mesiah was needed to convert the faithful.

While I’m at this point in the article I have to say, now the NRL is a sport were one would stand up and pay attention to the moneyball phenom. Like baseball, it’s a sport of hundreds of identical repetitions, and very easy to data point out.

the tailor has to cut his cloth to the material available and look to get ahead of an unfair game in the areas it has always been strong: predictive intelligence and rugby ‘smarts’

Actually while I’m still here, Opta Expected Points analysis is the one new tool I have found interesting in the age of data. Seen how the random plays out as either likely, or unlikely, in the data’s (and algorithms) has actually married very closely to how I saw a lot of contests pan out.

Engaging return article Nick. I wonder, how much of money ball is about strategy as apposed to picks, those young fella’s got ahead originally because they were picking players that played their way right? Often all you here about is in regards to players, quick phase ruck ball, one out or straight up, would be were I’d imagine the best gains are going to be for a data driven leap using an AI model of how to structure your phases. Then moving to tactically for each opposition.
