Mark Telea ruled out as All Blacks name team for Ireland quarterfinal

The All Blacks feel that they are exactly “where we want to be” ahead of a blockbuster Rugby World Cup quarterfinal against Ireland on Saturday evening. Coach Ian Foster has named a near full-strength side, but there is a notable change on the left wing.

As reported by the New Zealand Herald earlier this week, Mark Telea was set to miss the clash. That rumour has been made official with Leicester Fainga’anuku set to start in the No. 11 jersey instead.

Coach Ian Foster has confirmed that Telea was ruled out of the clash due to disciplinary reasons.

Enforcer Ethan de Groot is a welcomed inclusion with the front-rower returning from suspension to take on the world’s top-ranked side. De Groot will pack down alongside Tyrel Lomax who has overcome an injury scare to face the Irish.

The rest of the team is practically at full strength, but the decision to select Finlay Christie over fan favourite Cam Roigard on the bench is sure to raise some eyebrows back in  New Zealand.

“We are where we want to be,” coach Ian Foster said in a statement. “World Cup quarterfinals are so exciting for many reasons, and we know the pressure they bring.

“We have had a solid week of preparation and know that it is now about trusting the work we have done and going out to play.

“We feel the massive support we have had from Kiwis both at home and here in France. We greatly appreciate it.”

De Groot and Taylor will join Codie Taylor in the front row, while Brodie Retallick and Scott Barrett make up the rest of the tight five. Blindside flanker Shannon Frizell joins captain Sam Cane and world-class No. 8 Ardie Savea in a formidable backrow.

As for the backs, there aren’t too many surprises. Other than Fainga’anuku on the left wing, the rest of the backline is as many expected.

Aaron Smith will link up with Richie Mo’unga in the halves, while Jordie Barrett and Rieko Ioane will combine in the midfield. Fainga’anuku, Will Jordan and Beauden Barrett are the outside backs.

As for the bench, veteran Dane Coles has been picked ahead of Samisoni Taukei’aho. Finlay Christie and Damian McKenzie have also made the cut.

“We have huge respect for Ireland who are number one in the world for a reason,” Foster added.

“We are excited by the opportunity we have in front of us and expect to be tested in many ways. That is what World Cups are about.”

FORWARD PASS : Talea of course broke Team Protocol. Of course it’s his fault.

It’s like you are going to Battle Tomorrow. Your Sniper breaks protocol. You don’t leave him behind and risk your Team’s lives.

The only people being punished is them and the “Outcome Talea may have achieved if allowed to play in the 23.

Foster leaving it to the Senior Team Members to punish him is “Weak Leadership” on Foster’s part”

Foster has “Used” his Senior Team members, so he didn’t have to rule on it.

What’s even scarier, is that Senior Players should have said, “Do your own shit Fozzie”

Surely a “Heavy Fine” rather than leaving out your in - form “Sniper”
is a better result for the “Team” OR

Maybe they don’t want to play with him, who knows.

These senior players are “all going” and I think they have protected “themselves by agreeing with Foster” and not rocking the boat, for their “Last Hurrah”

A bit like 2019 really. Out played and Out coached.

That “Attitude” is not one that will beat Ireland or WIN a Rugby World Cup.

AB’s will win this one. Game changer for me is Ardie Savea, he is incredibly fast off back of scrum and line-outs in attack and defense. He will take Sexton out the game, won’t have time to kick and won’t have time to run on attack. On defense Ireland loosies won’t be able to protect him so he’ll be held up in tackle ruck. My prediction NZ by twelve.

Foster didn't steal your favorite toy or partner in the past by any chance??

Great call. I think that A.B’s can WIN. Simply talking about odds.

I am no expert on “Tactics at Rugby” What I do know a little bit about is “How people think”

I do know that the team who makes the least mistakes WINS.

Ireland is the favourite. They should be the favourite.

Their biggest mistake is: They have put New Zealand in a box.

“Well I am not that stupid to think that these All Blacks believe in FOSTER. I think Wayne Smith is running the Tactics and that is where their “Faith is really at”

Lets face it FOSTER is not that smart. Hansen has showed a presence. Wayne Smith has forgotten more about “coaching rugby” than Foster knows.

If that is not the case, “The All Blacks need to ring Wayne and say,

”How do we beat Ireland?”

I know Wayne SMITH is a rugby genius. No one in the World gets close to his “Knowledge, Understanding and Ability to Implement
specific plans to enhance any team(s) chance of winning”

He is the simply, ”The Professor of New Zealand Rugby”

Hopefully he will be New Zealand Rugby Union CEO.

So much wishing rather than reality about talk of AB chances.

Focusing only on the meaningful & testing games ie 2X V Bok'23 + V France RWC, the 2022 ‘hot/cold’ [ie lukewarm] ABs are still alive.

BUT ABs CAN do it...if best selected

If cold AB show up (& if so Cane needs to be subbed off in the 1st half), Ireland by 21.

If hot AB show up them by 21.

Christie over Roigard! Gobsmacking. I assume that’s a Schmidt idea rather than Foster strikes again. I assume its rational & hope it’s works out.
Re Telea, What! Yep discipline him.. but him not the team (by affecting best possible team … which he’s be in). ie not many jobs you given the day off cos your late!! This iis emotional, show pony discipline & exhibitionism. Reminds me of Foster’s other bizarre & emotional 2022 responses to incidents eg losses. Should be best man  (& he is) for the job to be done. Dock severely on pay if it’s worthy. I get ‘team / group ‘ INPUT on decisions but not on selections with which ‘certain other ‘ team members have an interest in him not being selected.

RE other selections, just the usual for 2020 til now ie,
I’d have Papalii  over Cane anyday at least to start.
& with Telea in (with no match pay + fine) putting Jordan at full back instead of B.Barrett.

“If you do not expect the unexpected you will not find it, for it is not to be reached by search or trail” Heraclitus.

Maybe TALEA was looking for a “Heraclitus moment”

All Blacks are the outsiders in a two horse race. That’s not so bad!

I couldn’t back them with stolen money.

Hey, even the worst coached All Black team in history can still WIN, because they are All Blacks, nothing to do with the coach.

We can’t change the coach, yet we don’t have to listen to him.

Believe in yourself. But whatever you do don’t believe in Foster or the School Teacher.

When we have possession:

“Don’t kick the ball back, Run it, don’t kick the ball out, Run it. An All Black team “Running the ball is a winning All Black Team” even if we have only 30% possession, which is a “real possibility’ against Ireland.

Short lineouts with the three best jumpers.

Good Luck to the All Blacks.

Your fate is in your hands not in the hands of a ”sacked second rate coach, who couldn’t train ivy up a wall.

“Now is your future, this moment is yours, own it”

Would have been nice to have star winger Narawa, or even Shaun Stevenson, about now. With LF on the park and able to cover 12 or 13 I reckon they would have got more value out of one of those wingers than having ALB trying his damnedest to not get humiliated by this opposition.

Not the team I was thinking it would need to be a few months ago, come this crunch game, but far enough towards it to foresee a much better contest between this two foe’s this time.

I’ve had enough of the endless ruminations about this game. I just want to watch it now and be put out of my misery. Hoping the ABs unleash and shock everyone.

Only real problem I have is Roigard. I think that’s a massive opportunity lost. Otherwise makes sense and in step with what we’ve seen. Be interesting to see how the young props go off the bench, some dynamism there for sure. Great to see Fainga’anuku there but not in those circumstances. Here’s hoping!

Foster selects team to lose.
The only chance of winning would be selecting Papali'i to start at 7 instead of Cane. So expect no turnovers from 7, but plenty conceded.
Expect telegraphed box kicks from Toilet Boy, and no running around the ruck (to save his body for the 'more important' big-money contract after the World Cup). NZ inside backs under intense pressure when with the ball - as Ireland know TB won't run - so we will kick away the ball.
Will Jordan should be at fullback, not Beauden Barrett. BB is only an impact player off the bench. Also expect more stupid kicks from Beauden.
At least they have got Leicester on the left wing.
Selectors will regret not selecting Telea on the right wing (for his 'minor breach of protocol') - there will be no next week.
Final nail is not even selecting Roigard on the bench. Roigard should be starting ahead of the over-rated Smith
It's a shame that the greatest All Black lock (Whitelock) will end his career tomorrow. NZ couldn't even win its own lineout before Whitelock first played for the ABs.

'Let's not sugarcoat it': Former All Black's urgent call to protect eligibility rules

Yep, no one knows what will happen. Thing is I think (this is me arguing a point here not a random debate with this one) they're better off trialing it now in a controlled environment than waiting to open it up in a knee jerk style reaction to a crumbling organtization and team. They can always stop it again.

The principle idea is that why would players leave just because the door is ajar?

BBBR decides to go but is not good enough to retain the jersey after doing it. NZ no longer need to do what I suggest by paying him to get back upto speed. That is solely a concept of a body that needs to do what I call pick and stick wth players. NZR can't hold onto everyone so they have to choose their BBBRs and if that player comes back from a sabbatical under par it's a priority to get him upto speed as fast as possible because half of his competition has been let go overseas because they can't hold onto them all. Changing eligibility removes that dilemma, if a BBBR isn't playing well you can be assured that someone else is (well the idea is that you can be more assured than if you only selected from domestic players).

So if someone decides they want to go overseas, they better do it with an org than is going to help improve them, otherwise theyre still basically as ineligible as if they would have been scorning a NZ Super side that would have given them the best chance to be an All Black.
