All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson and his staff have named his team to play the Wallabies in the second Bledisloe Test at Sky Stadium in Wellington.

The headline change is Beauden Barrett returning to the line up to start at first five-eighth after missing last week’s Test with illness.

McKenzie has been moved to the bench in the No 22 jersey, alongside utility David Havili who has been named for his first All Blacks appearance of 2024 in the No 23 jersey.

Barrett will partner long-time teammate TJ Perenara, who moves back into the starting side with Cortez Ratima swapping roles.

It will be Perenara’s last home Test as an All Black having confirmed a move to Japan in 2025.

In the midfield Anton Lienert-Brown has been named alongside Rieko Ioane to replace the injured Jordie Barrett at second-five eighth.

Also returning to the All Blacks is Blues lock Patrick Tuipulotu, who has been named as the reserve lock replacing Sam Darry.

The starting forward pack otherwise remains unchanged, with the same 8 as in Sydney, with openside Sam Cane set to play his 100th for the All Blacks and become the 13th player to reach the milestone for the team.

Robertson explained the changes and expressed excitement for TJ Perenara and Sam Cane.

“This will be a particularly special night for Sam and TJ and the boys will put in a performance that honours their contribution to this team. Sam will be joining an exclusive club of All Black centurions, which is testament to his fortitude and work ethic,” Robertson said.

“As a Wellington man and the most-capped Hurricane of all time, we know that TJ is a crowd favourite in the capital and we look forward to him expressing himself on the field in front of friends and whanau at home.”

“Damian McKenzie can provide experienced cover at both first-five and fullback, as Beauden has previously, and it is great to bring David Havili in to complete the 23, providing strong depth across the back line.

“We are excited about the opportunity this week to put in a complete performance against the Wallabies in Wellington.”

well razor beleives that because both barrett and tj played together a fewyears ago and thehurricanes have a good record at home it might help us win

I greatly respect Damian McKenzie with his courageous jinking runs and his wonderful conversions plus everything else about him (I'm from Canterbury via Otago). I can see many great reasons for him to come off the bench in this next game and I bet he is absolutely ok with it. I would not however presume to put these reasons forward as I am well aware of my low level of understanding and expertise compared to the many of those accomplished people whose responsibility it is to make these decisions. I applaud them all, players, coaches and support staff who pour them selves into providing these spectacles that I cannot resist watching. I'm retired but some of you need to get a job.

We also learn that Ethan Blackadder was available. He was outstanding against South Africa. He should be starting , a long with Sititi and Savea. Cane should not be starting and TJ not there at all. Ratima starting with Noah Hotham on the bench, both brilliant young halfbacks. George Bell , playing so well, off the bench backing Codie Taylor. The northern tour looms like a dark shadow.

I'm just not convinced about these players playing together as a team.

Sam Cane leaving for Japan

Tj Perenara leaving for Japan.

Beauden Barrett is 33.

There's talk about Richie & Brodie coming back next year.

Richie wil be 33 at the next world cup. Barrett won't be there.

Brodie will be 36.

There is all this talk about Tupou Vaa'i. That's the thing. Just talk. I'm not seeing anything special.

David Havili looks good when players around him are in form & they're not.

The Wallabies won't beat the All Blacks on the weekend. The All Blacks on the other hand NEED to put this wallaby team away properly this weekend to build confidence for the end of year tour because that has the potential to be catastrophic.

Nobody is talking about Retallick coming back seriously. Richie Mounga currently sounds like a better option than DMac at this point, DMac cannot get his team to score in the last 20. Tupou Vaai is excellent, tell me you don't know rugby without saying it. Currently better than almost every international lock, including Etzebeth. Havili is only there as cover, nobody else can cover as many positions as he can (12,13,10,15).

Every week a team is announced, and every week the case for Razor getting axed gets stronger.

Win or lose this game the selection process has been amateur and desperate. It's just reactive like a cricket captain constantly moving fielders to where the ball has just been hit instead of where you want the ball to go. This coaching team are chasing their tail, always trying to select a team to win last week's match.

They are one step behind every coach they have played this year and it shows in their round about selection policies. Surely anyone selected for the team needs to be good enough to close out a game.

A reporter said to Robertson in a throw away comment that the ABs have not scored in the last 20 minutes in 3 out of the last 4 games which he hadn't realised and said "I'll look into it" Now it seems he is building his whole selection policy around this but making the problem worse. Since it was mentioned, and Robertson started talking about it in press conferences they ABs points differentials have been -7, -14, -5, and -14 in the last 20 minutes. In those games their percentage of possession in the last 10 mins has been 44%, 33%, 35%, 19%. Everything they are doing selection wise is having the opposite effect.

The NH tour which starts in 6 weeks will be a fork in the road for this team. We will find rock bottom there as we did in 2021.

He is just doing this for the oldies last run. Giving them a good send off. Next year I expect him to make some radical changes. If he doesn't, his job should be threatened. Paying for contracts which don't matter as put a real strain on NZR, and he cannot keep selecting guys who won't play the next RWC

T
Tk 56 days ago

This really does seem like an odd, patched together team. Selection has been erratic so far under Razor.

C
ClintP 56 days ago

We need a new captain, Barrett is too quiet, doesn’t ask questions of the officials and his performance seems stunted by the pressure. This team needs an overhaul if we are planning for the next World Cup, a lot of these guys won’t be here next year let alone in ‘27.

D
DS 55 days ago

The choice of the three onfield leaders seems poorly thought out. The narrow base of coaches (all Crusaders) has so little variety.

I
Icefarrow 56 days ago

Scott's performance is not being stunted by the captaincy, but by the fact that he was out injured for the majority of the Super Rugby season. I'm sure he'll be better next year, given he stops injuring his fingers during club and international seasons.

This will be awesome! Excited for TJ to nail his last game, at home. And if not Ratima can just come on!

We are getting a face off between eras!! Old vs new, tried and failed v exciting and uncertain, stuttery v sublime (or not). I think they're playing Beauden, and his old side kicks either side no less, to prove to themselves that they have found the answer in Ratima and Dmac, and Jordie. It shows Razor doesn't yet have the confidence in his coaching ability, but it will be fun to see this play out!

I
Icefarrow 56 days ago

Are we though? It's more likely they're going with proven combinations for this farewell, given Ardie, TJ, Beauden all used to play Super Rugby together for the Hurricanes. The same can be said for the bench, given Ratima and McKenzie play together for the Chiefs.

G
GL 56 days ago

That's a pretty ordinary team; thought we had moved from BB at 10 since he did not work since 2021. And who is kicking? (DMac is at 85% in rugby championship)

And TJ, maybe 45 mins?

Maybe this is all Wellington deserves..will be a tough eve

C

I swear alot of armchair critics don't understand how combinations work

D
DS 55 days ago

And the current coaches do?

F
Forward pass 56 days ago

So explain it to us. We have a Canes 9 with a Blues 10 and a Chiefs 12. But on the bench we have a Chiefs 9 and 10 with a Crusaders 12. Is that combinations?

B
Bruiser 56 days ago

Havilli??? Hes got nothing to offer. Would have ben great opportunity to see another young prospect like Proctor or Love..we have seen Haviili isnt up to it at test level. Is Dalton not good enough now for the bench??

I
Icefarrow 56 days ago

Havili offers the ability to cover both inside and outside centre, something the ABs desperately need at the moment given their usual 12/13 cover is now the starting 12. Unfortunately, Proctor is a specialist 13, and wouldn't be able to replace ALB if he goes down injured.

Ruben Love is out due to injuring his quadriceps whilst playing in the NPC, which is a shame given Razor sounded ready to field him.

P
PR 56 days ago

Hopefully, Havili was picked as it will be his farewell test. That said, I can possibly see why TJ & Cane would get a farewell test, but Havilli?

J
JWH 56 days ago

Ruben Love is injured

T
Teddy 56 days ago

Well that will do wonders for the little fellas confidence!

Clearly they expect another tight game against their tier 2 opposition.

Or McKenzie comes on late and they finally score in the last 20 mins?

S
Spew_81 56 days ago

At test level, especially a tight knockout game against a top team, McKenzie is probably best a super sub as a replacement for: 15/10/14 or even as a hard running playmaking 9.

As a replacement 9 he could've had a scarily good combination with Mo'unga. With Savea at 8 (with Sititi backing up), Clarke as the inside option, B Barrett at in at 15, or Jordan on the outside, who would the defense focus on? From a midfield scrum 10-15 meters out, it would almost be impossible to defend against.

M
MattJH 56 days ago

Dmacs a good bench option against tired opposition. I reckon they should just leave him at 10 in my opinion. His execution was off last week- but only when it was off. He was also responsible for the good stuff too.

F

Razors retarded selections continues. Time we got Foster back. This bloke is just plain weird.

G

So it's BB kicking for goal? Has he done that in living memory 😂?

This year in Japan.

J

My mind is blank about that one, intentionally!

G
GL 56 days ago

TJ? 😂

F
Forward pass 56 days ago

Yeah it gets stranger and stranger. NZ won last week because Dmac made so many line breaks we scored 4 tries and then he converted all 4 plus the winning 3 pointer. Do we believe BB will do that?

'Passionate reunion of France and New Zealand shows Fabien Galthie is wrong to rest his stars'

Ok, managed to read the full article..

... New Zealand’s has only 14 and the professional season is all over within four months. In France, club governance is the responsibility of an independent organisation [the Ligue Nationale de Rugby or LNR] which is entirely separate from the host union [the Fédération Française de Rugby or FFR]. Down south New Zealand Rugby runs the provincial and the national game.

That is the National Provincial Championship, a competition of 14 representative union based teams run through the SH international window and only semi professional (paid only during it's running). It is run by NZR and goes for two and a half months.

Super Rugby is a competition involving 12 fully professional teams, of which 5 are of New Zealand eligibility, and another joint administered team of Pacific Island eligibility, with NZR involvement. It was a 18 week competition this year, so involved (randomly chosen I believe) extra return fixtures (2 or 3 home and away derbys), and is run by Super Rugby Pacific's own independent Board (or organisation). The teams may or may not be independently run and owned (note, this does not necessarily mean what you think of as 'privately owned').

LNR was setup by FFR and the French Government to administer the professional game in France. In New Zealand, the Players Association and Super Rugby franchises agreed last month to not setup their own governance structure for professional rugby and re-aligned themselves with New Zealand Rugby. They had been proposing to do something like the English model, I'm not sure how closely that would have been aligned to the French system but it did not sound like it would have French union executive representation on it like the LNR does.

In the shaky isles the professional pyramid tapers to a point with the almighty All Blacks. In France the feeling for country is no more important than the sense of fierce local identity spawned at myriad clubs concentrated in the southwest. Progress is achieved by a nonchalant shrug and the wide sweep of nuanced negotiation, rather than driven from the top by a single intense focus.

Yes, it is pretty much a 'representative' selection system at every level, but these union's are having to fight for their existence against the regime that is NZR, and are currently going through their own battle, just as France has recently as I understand it. A single focus, ala the French game, might not be the best outcome for rugby as a whole.

For pure theatre, it is a wonderful article so far. I prefer 'Ntamack New Zealand 2022' though.

The young Crusader still struggles to solve the puzzle posed by the shorter, more compact tight-heads at this level but he had no problem at all with Colombe.

It was interesting to listen to Manny during an interview on Maul or Nothing, he citied that after a bit of banter with the All Black's he no longer wanted one of their jersey's after the game. One of those talks was an eye to eye chat with Tamaiti Williams, there appear to be nothing between the lock and prop, just a lot of give and take. I thought TW angled in and caused Taylor to pop a few times, and that NZ were lucky to be rewarded.

f you have a forward of 6ft 8ins and 145kg, and he is not at all disturbed by a dysfunctional set-piece, you are in business.

He talked about the clarity of the leadership that helped alleviate any need for anxiety at the predicaments unfolding before him. The same cannot be said for New Zealand when they had 5 minutes left to retrieve a match winning penalty, I don't believe. Did the team in black have much of a plan at any point in the game? I don't really call an autonomous 10 vehicle they had as innovative. I think Razor needs to go back to the dealer and get a new game driver on that one.

Vaa’i is no match for his power on the ground. Even in reverse, Meafou is like a tractor motoring backwards in low gear, trampling all in its path.

Vaa'i actually stops him in his tracks. He gets what could have been a dubious 'tackle' on him?

A high-level offence will often try to identify and exploit big forwards who can be slower to reload, and therefore vulnerable to two quick plays run at them consecutively.

Yes he was just standing on his haunches wasn't he? He mentioned that in the interview, saying that not only did you just get up and back into the line to find the opposition was already set and running at you they also hit harder than anything he'd experienced in the Top 14. He was referring to New Zealands ultra-physical, burst-based Super style of course, which he was more than a bit surprised about. I don't blame him for being caught out.

He still sent the obstruction back to the repair yard though!

What wouldn’t the New Zealand rugby public give to see the likes of Mauvaka and Meafou up front..

Common now Nick, don't go there! Meafou showed his Toulouse shirt and promptly got his citizenship, New Zealand can't have him, surely?!?

As I have said before with these subjects, really enjoy your enthusiasm for their contribution on the field and I'd love to see more of their shapes running out for Vern Cotter and the like styled teams.
