Jared Payne has been ruled out of the British and Irish Lions’ third and deciding Test against the All Blacks due to migraine headaches.

On Wednesday, the Lions excluded New Zealand-born Payne from contention for the series decider at Eden Park in Auckland as he struggles with migraines.

The Ireland back, 31, had been in doubt for Saturday’s blockbuster clash with the All Blacks, having not featured for Warren Gatland’s tourists since their 34-6 win over the Chiefs on June 20.

“While the findings of Jared’s tests have been normal he still has migraine and will not be fit to train until his symptoms have settled,” said Lions head coach Gatland.

“The specialists are happy that the symptoms are not concussion related and he is expected to recover fully. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

The Lions are in a good position to claim their first series victory in New Zealand since 1971 following last week’s 24-21 triumph in Wellington.

World champions and hosts New Zealand won the opening Test 30-15 in Auckland.
