New in-game system sees brutal yellow card incident upgraded to red

A yellow card for a brutal head-on-head collision during the Super Rugby Pacific match between the Queensland Reds and Brumbies on Friday was upgraded to a red following an in-game review.

Angus Blyth of the Reds was initially given a yellow card for his high tackle on Brumbies winger Corey Toole, but it was later upgraded to a red card.

It’s the second time the new system has seen a yellow carded graded in such a manner.

Blyth caught Toole high with a shocking tackle as the wing kicked forward early in the match.

Toole struggled to stand up after the hit, and referee Ben O’Keeffe had to tell him to sit down. He subsequently failed his head injury assessment.

O’Keeffe initially said it met the yellow card threshold and sent it for ‘review’. The subsequent review saw it upgraded to a red card.

It’s an example of a new system which is being employed by Super Rugby Pacific, in which referees are empowered to issue a yellow card to players for their misconduct, following which the Television Match Official (TMO) reviews the incident to determine if the punishment should be escalated to red.

The TMO has a window of eight minutes within which to finalise their judgment.

The first use of the system saw Hurricanes prop Tevita Mafileo banned for three weeks after an incident in a ruck was upgraded to a red card following review.

Never mind a red card, that assault (it wasn't any kind of tackle) is in Life Ban territory 😳

The only nitpicking is coming from you. There is a process in place and the ref followed correctly. If we followed your suggestion next thing there would be discussion on field about whether the decision should be made then or go to the TMO. And I think you are the only person worried about the extra responsibility on the TMO. He has 8 minutes to view all the tapes and make a decision without any crowd input. It all seems very sensible to me.

Should’ve been immediate red, just off that clip that’s horrific and shouldn’t have been even given a chance, just on principle you know

"It seems like the idea of Ardie Savea moving to openside flanker is no longer on the table"

Says who? Savea was picked on the open side, with Wallace Sititi at 8, against France. It makes no difference to Savea’s game, whatsoever and allows Sititi to play in his preferred position. It also provides an option to bring in a third loose forward that may provide a better lineout option and a big body to compete with some of the big bodies found in other teams.

It was unfortunate that Finau was injured so early on against France before he had a chance to show how he might combine with Savea and Sititi, and there is still a possibility that Hoskins Sotutu might be effective alongside them too.

Don’t count out viable options.
