New Zealand 30 Lions 15: The key moments

Codie Taylor celebrates scoring the first try at Eden Park

New Zealand ultimately proved far too strong for the British and Irish Lions on Saturday, running out 30-15 winners in a pulsating first Test at Eden Park.

We take a look at the key moments that decided the series opener.

2 minutes: Jonathan Davies breaks through a huge gap in midfield before passing inside for Conor Murray, who is stopped around five metres short of the New Zealand line. The Lions earn quick ball and Owen Farrell flicks a pass wide to Elliot Daly, but Israel Dagg makes a crucial try-saving challenge, bundling his fellow wing into touch.

18: Having moved ahead through a Beauden Barrett penalty, the All Blacks increase their advantage with a wonderful, opportunistic try. Aaron Smith takes a quick tap five metres out and the ball is rapidly spread from left to right via Barrett and Dagg, with hooker Codie Taylor producing a stunning pick-up off his bootlaces on the wing to score. Barrett converts to make it 10-0 inside the opening quarter.

36: Still trailing by 10 points at 13-3 with half-time looming, the tourists score one of the great Lions tries. Liam Williams – a surprise pick ahead of Leigh Halfpenny at full-back – starts things off, stepping past Kieran Read and evading further tackles on a burst out of his own 22. Davies arrives in support before passing wide to Daly, who draws his man before returning the ball to the centre. One more inside pass allows Sean O’Brien to round off a sensational length-of-the-field move.

46: Another thrilling break from deep, again featuring Davies and Williams, gets the Lions to within five metres of the New Zealand line. When a penalty comes the tourists’ way out wide, Farrell kicks for touch, but the Lions cannot capitalise and remain behind after losing the ball.

55: In the immediate aftermath of Sam Warburton’s introduction in place of Peter O’Mahony, the All Blacks demolish the Lions at a scrum. With advantage being played, Read produces a stunning offload to Smith and New Zealand’s backs then spring into life to get Rieko Ioane over on the left. Barrett maintains his perfect record with the boot to extend his side’s lead to 12.

71: Following another penalty from Barrett, Ioane goes over again to extinguish any hopes of a late Lions fightback, out-pacing Daly after Williams had failed to take a high kick from TJ Perenara. Barrett keeps his 100 per cent record from the tee intact to finish with 16 points and Rhys Webb’s subsequent late try provides little consolation for the tourists.
