'Nothing short of an absolute disgrace' - Sinfield snubbing blasted

Kevin Sinfield - PA

The apparent decision not to include new England rugby defence coach Kevin Sinfield in the New Year’s honours list has been put on blast on social media.

Sinfield was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2014 Birthday Honours for services to rugby league and Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2021 Birthday Honours for services to rugby league football and charitable fundraising.

However, the decision not to fully Knight Sinfield has ruffled feathers, not least given his ongoing charity work in relation to Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

The 42-year-old has raised over £7m for charity and championed research in support of ex-Leeds teammate Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with MND, his fundraising also honours former rugby union player Doddie Weir and former footballer Stephen Darby, both of whom were diagnosed with the life-limiting disease.

Many expressed their upset that the new England rugby union defence coach had not been made a ‘Sir’.

One account posted: “Sorry but not having Kevin Sinfield in the New Years honours list is nothing short of an absolute disgrace. Can only hope it’s an error quickly rectified.”

Reporter Daniel Moxon wrote: “Despite his heroic fundraising efforts for MND research in support of his great mate Rob Burrow, Kevin Sinfield has been overlooked for a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list. A pretty glaring omission, in my book.”

“Could anyone tell me how on earth Kevin Sinfield has been overlooked AGAIN in the New Year’s Honours List? It makes a completely mockery of the entire system when someone so deserving of the highest recognition is ignored,” wrote another.

Former Wales player Lee Jarvis wrote: “It should be SIR Kevin Sinfield after the new year, BUT nothing at all. He should be giving out the medals. Shocking… Honouring the best? My ass.”

Another rugby league account wrote: “I have to say that the honours list this year is absolutely appalling. Firstly, all the Lionesses team should of got a MBE, the England RL Wheelchair team should of been recognised and Kevin Sinfield should of been a Sir.”

Another frustrated Tweeter wrote: “That Kevin Sinfield has not been given a knighthood in the #NewYearsHonours is disgraceful. He deserved one for his achievements on the field alone, but what he has done over the last three years for his friend Rob Burrow and the entire MND community is nothing short of amazing.”

Some have suggested that Sinfield’s recently awarded MBE in 2021 meant that he would not be considered for a Knighthood – not yet at least – as a result, with a mandatory three-year hiatus between honours being the norm.

Sinfield started playing rugby league at Waterhead ARLFC. He was a player, captain and director of rugby for Leeds Rhinos where he led the team to seven Super League championships and two Challenge Cup successes. He was a loose forward as well as a stand-off.

He played 26 rugby league tests for England which he captained and 14 tests for Great Britain. He holds the record for the highest points-scorer in Super League history and earned many individual accolades including the Lance Todd Trophy (2005), Harry Sunderland Trophy (2009, 2012) and the Golden Boot (2012).

Sinfield has been defence coach alongside new England head coach Steve Borthwick in their record-breaking run at Leicester Tigers. He now joins Borthwick in the English national side as they plot a Guinness Six Nations triumph in 2023.

I stopped most of my ALS medications due to severe side effects and I started on ALS herbal treatments from VineHealth Center (vinehealth center. c om), the treatment has made a very huge difference for me. My symptoms including body weakness and slurred speech disappeared after few months on the treatment. I am getting active again since starting this treatment.

The Springboks have something you don't have

A few comments. Firstly, I am a Bok fan and it's been a golden period for us. I hope my fellow Bok fans appreciate this time and know that it cannot last forever, so soak it all in!

The other thing to mention (and this is targeted at Welsh, English and even Aussie supporters who might be feeling somewhat dejected) is that it's easy to forget that just before Rassie Erasmus took over in 2018, the Boks were ranked 7th in the world and I had given up hope we'd ever be world beaters again.

Sport is a fickle thing and Rassie and his team have managed to get right whatever little things it takes to make a mediocre team great. I initially worried his methods might be short-lived (how many times can you raise a person's commitment by talking about his family and his love of his country as a motivator), but he seems to have found a way. After winning in 2019 on what was a very simple game plan, he has taken things up ever year - amazing work which has to be applauded! (Dankie Rassie! Ons wardeer wat jy vir die ondersteuners en die land doen!) (Google translate if you don't understand Afrikaans! 😁)

I don't think people outside South Africa fully comprehend the enormity of the impact seeing black and white, English, Afrikaans and Xhosa and all the other hues playing together does for the country's sense of unity. It's pure joy and happiness.

This autumn tour has been a bit frustrating in that the Boks have won, but never all that convincingly. On the one hand, I'd like to have seen more decisive victories, BUT what Rassie has done is expose a huge number of players to test rugby, whilst also diversifying the way the Boks play (Tony Brown's influence).

This change of both style and personnel has resulted in a lack of cohesion at times and we've lost some of the control, whereas had we been playing our more traditional style, that wouldn't happen. This is partially attributable to the fact that you cannot play Tony Brown's expansive game whilst also having 3 players available at every contact point to clear the defence off the ball. I have enjoyed seeing the Boks play a more exciting, less attritional game, which is a boring, albeit effective spectacle. So, I am happy to be patient, because the end justifies the means (and I trust Rassie!). Hopefully all these players we are blooding will give us incredible options for substitutions come next year's Rugby Championship and of course, the big prize in 2027.

Last point! The game of rugby has never been as exciting as it is now. Any of Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Argentina, Scotland, England & Australia can beat one another. South Africa may be ranked #1, but I wouldn't bet my house in them beating France or New Zealand, and we saw Argentina beating both South Africa and New Zealand this year! That's wonderful for the game and makes the victories we do get all the sweeter. Each win is 100% earned. Long may it last!

Sorry for the long post! 🏉🌍
