Munster back row Peter O’Mahony has apologised to a Limerick rugby club after a video was circulated in which he used an expletive about their U15s team.

O’Mahony had wished UL Bohemians U15s team good luck in a 12-second long video ahead of a match against Garryowen, the club who made famous the kicking technique of the same name in the 1920s.

The video raised the ire of Garryowen, who released a statement regarding the whole incident and to let their club members know that O’Mahony had apologised for the comments.

The statement breaks down in detail exactly what happened.

“As we all know by now the contents of the video containing views expressed by Peter O’Mahony, while in wishing UL Bohemians well in their North Munster U15 League final against Ganyowcn, it also contained inappropriate comments directed towards our U15 team and the wider club in general.”

O’Mahony described Garryowen as ‘those ***kers’ and said he ‘never liked them’.

“This incident was reported to The Executive Committee of Ganyowen Football Club on Monday morning and they have been working on the issue since.

“Late yesterday afternoon, the President of Garryowen received a phone call from Peter O’Mahony, in which he expressed his sincere remorse and apologies for the video, and the effect that it has had on our U15’s, their coaches, their parents, and the wider club. He undertook to do his pan to try and redress that.

“Peter has made a second video, which was received this evening, in which he apologises for the first video. This video will be shown to parents and players before training on Friday evening. In addition to the video, following discussion with the Garryowen President.

“Peter O’Mahony has also agreed to write to the club and meet the U15 players in person, in the near future.

“UL Bohemians have also been in contact and they have apologised for the video.

“Our core belief in Garryowen FC is that good people make players, has stood us in good stead since 1884. Respect for your opponent, and by extension for anyone who plays or officiates the game, is an integral part of the game, for us as a club. We expect all of our players to adhere to this explicit and implicit value.

“On this occasion, that standard was not met by others outside our club. We hope these actions by Peter and an apology will bring this matter to its conclusion.’
