Record-breaking scrumhalf George Horne to stay in Scotland

George Horne - PA

Glasgow Warriors scrum-half George Horne has signed a new deal that will see him stay with the Scottish URC side for “the foreseeable future”.

Horne became the club’s all-time leading try-scorer, surpassing DTH van der Merwe with his 55th try during Saturday’s BKT United Rugby Championship fixture against the Emirates Lions at Scotstoun.

The 29-year-old made his professional debut for the Warriors in November 2016 and has since established himself as a central figure within the squad.

Andy Farrell and his British and Irish Lions coaching team take questions from Alex Payne ahead of their 2025 tour of Australia.

A product of Howe of Fife, he marked his 100th club appearance earlier this season with a try against Leinster, just 90 seconds after coming off the bench.

In January 2025, Horne also became the club’s top try-scorer in European competition, overtaking the previous record with scores against Sale Sharks and Racing 92.

Having drawn level with van der Merwe by scoring against Munster last weekend, Horne moved clear with his finish against the Lions on the club’s Plaster It Purple charity night.

“I’m massively proud to represent this club,” Horne told glasgowwarriors.org.

“I love coming in to training every day – we’ve got a great group of boys here, and everyone around the club makes it a great place to be. I can’t wait to be here for another couple of years.

“I’m incredibly proud to have reached the all-time try record, but we don’t play rugby for individual accolades – it’s all about the team, and getting that taste of success in Pretoria last year has given me and the rest of the guys a real hunger to go out and do it again.

“We’re all desperate to get that winning feeling back at Scotstoun again – we know how much hard work it took last season, but we have the players, management and backroom staff to achieve that.

“I want to thank the Warrior Nation too – rugby without the fans is nothing, and the supporters turn up in all weathers at Scotstoun and make themselves seen and heard. We’re so proud to represent them and the city of Glasgow, and we’re so thankful to have the chance to play for them. Thank you to everyone for their support and the messages over the last couple of days, I’m really thankful.”

Horne has earned 36 caps for Scotland since debuting on the 2018 summer tour to the USA and has scored 44 points for his country, most recently featuring in this year’s Six Nations win over Wales at Murrayfield.

“George is a great example of what it means to be a Glasgow Warrior, and he helps to drive our standards on and off the field,” said Head Coach Franco Smith.

“His work ethic and determination to be the best version of himself is clear for all to see, with his passion to represent this club evident each time he pulls on the jersey. We’re proud of what he’s achieved in a Glasgow Warriors shirt so far, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with him.”
