Saints back row latest to head to France

Young Northampton Saints back rower Karl Wilkins has left the side following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season – the Gallagher Premiership club have confirmed.

The 27-year-old joined Saints from French side AS Béziers Hérault ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, and went on to make 14 appearances for his boyhood side over the two seasons in Northampton, scoring one try against Leicester Tigers.

A product of the Saints Academy system, Wilkins was part of the Northampton squad that won the Premiership’s Under-18 Academy League in 2013/14 before leaving for ASM Clermont Auvergne in France aged 18.

Wilkins then rejoined boyhood club Saints after making over 50 appearances for French ProD2 side Béziers since his arrival from Clermont in 2016.

The Ipswich-born flanker joins ProD2 outfit US Montauban, and “departs with the best wishes of everyone at the Club.”

Wilkins joins fellow Saints forward Dave Ribbans in heading to France, with the England lock heading to Toulon.

Kyle Preston has been a revelation for the Crusaders since his hat trick debut in Round One off the bench , against the Hurricanes. Will Jordan, Justin Marshall and O’Connor right in there praise. Noah Hotham, also brilliant half back, will be back soon. A great comp between these two in the years to come.

2024 six nations Ireland went to France and beat them comfortably. No Dupont of course, but won on the day. Clearly Ireland are heading into a rebuilding phase. I always think this is an interesting period, cream will rise to the top. Will that cream be good enough? I like Izuchuckwu, but needs to keep his head in the game. I thought Edwin Edogbo was developing nicely until injuries hampered him. There is something to work with.

Honestly, Galthe’s response isn’t all that surprising when you consider just how egotistical and unapologetic modern coaches have become. Everything is now the ref’s fault, except when you win, and even then sometimes it still is. Rassie, Robertson, Galthe, Borthwick, Farell etc all moaning and whinging every match. Time for them to grow up and start acting like adults.

I think the accusations of ‘deliberate late hits’, in 2024, affected him mentally. He didn’t seem as aggressive after that furore. Hopefully he goes back to ‘folding people’, in a 100% legal manner, in 2025.

Agree Finau has great potential. He didn’t really grab his opportunity in 2023 and 2024. But hopefully 2025 will be the year he breaks through. The All Blacks need a someone who can bring the pain on defense.

Suafoa was the quiet achiever in the Blues for a while. Tuipulotu, Papali’i, Sotutu would catch the commentators eye. But Suafoa would be doing the hard yards while still being dynamic.


Suafoa was a bit quiet last year as he was beating cancer and had to stop playing for a bit. That’s the kind of guy who will always give 100%.

Kirifi is playing well. Being less that six foot means he isn’t really a lineout option; though the openside rarely jumps.


Being a one position specialist also hurts him. In the medium term (I think before RWC 2027) World Rugby will reduce the number of subs from eight to five (they may leave bench at eight though). Players who can cover more than one role will be at a premium.


I always thought Kirifi should hit the gym and become a mobile number 2. He could’ve been like a more athletic version of Andrew Hore.

I’d start Sititi at eight as I think that gives him more opportunity to exploit his running skills. I think he has the potential to be the World Player of the Year. Immense potential.
