Scarlets sign a Welsh-qualified Super Rugby Pacific forward

Dwayne Peel’s Scarlets have pulled off a bit of a coup in securing the signature of a Welsh-qualified Super Rugby Pacific forward. A statement read: “Scarlets are delighted to announce the signing of Welsh-qualified forward Taine Plumtree ahead of the 2023/24 season.

“Born in Swansea, the 23-year-old back-rower is to arrive in Wales this week after confirming his move from New Zealand where he has been playing Super Rugby for the Auckland-based Blues and provincial rugby for Wellington.

“Taine is the son of John Plumtree, the former Swansea head coach and All Blacks and Ireland assistant coach. He was selected for the World Junior Championships in 2019 – playing for the Baby Blacks against Wales in that tournament in Argentina – with his senior career beginning with Wellington in New Zealand’s provincial competition, the Mitre 10 Cup.

“An athletic lineout forward and dynamic runner, Plumtree made his Super Rugby debut for the Blues in 2021 and has continued to impress for Wellington, scoring a hat-trick of tries in a game against Northland.

“Plumtree becomes the latest addition to the Scarlets squad for the 2023/24 campaign following the signings of Ioan Lloyd, Tomi Lewis, Alex Craig, Teddy Leatherbarrow, Charlie Titcombe and Efan Jones.”

Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel said: “Taine is an athletic, versatile forward who is able to play across the back row. We have been impressed by what we have seen of him with Wellington and when he has featured for the Blues in Super Rugby.

“He is a player of huge potential and we are excited for him to join the young generation of Scarlets who are coming through the ranks here. I am sure he will fit in well with the style of rugby we like to play and we’re looking forward to welcoming into the group ahead of the new season.”

Tonga is a tiny island in the Pacific that he isn't from but has heritage from. Fact is he's a Kiwi and is currently unable to represent New Zealand which reallyWorld rugby regulations make no sense. They seem to be setup currently to allow New Zealand to have a lot of it's top talent playing for other countries like England, Japan, Tonga, etc. It makes no sense when NZ’s a small country of five million.

Taylah got given the short straw but the producer on both arguments, though I think she put her hand up on the Kryen one, which I had long wondered if he thought he had a small window to represent Tonga before switching to New Zealand.

I’m also with Mil’s on the other, there are some very good Kiwis playing for the Aussie sides even now, who would be great to poach back. Kalani Thomas, Gamble, Murray reminds me very much of Shaun Stevenson. All these guys, and others, have the potential to explode and warrant a AB jersey.

It’s really got nothing to do with her point.

I got the sense she was just using it as a way to show that ABs are underperforming or not stepping up compared to the prospects, which is nothing to do with NZ v Aus.

I’m not sure her comparison made sense, and obviously Wilson suggested the likely reason for it this early in the season. Certainly Taylah still seemed to be championing NZ over Aus so not like she was saying they’re quantifiably better imo.

SadersMan has hit the nail on the head. I respect Taylah’s analysis but she left out one potential reason for the difference in performance - in the 30 games so far Aussie/Kiwis sides have only faced each other in 6 matches. While these have been won 3 all, two of the Aussie wins have only been by one point.

I would also like to see the stats for Anton L-B against Daugunu. I’m not a great fan of Iaone at centre but its pretty hard to shine if the team around you is struggling. Likewise, I’d like to see Tamaite Williams performance stats vs Bell.
