Scarlets snap up Fijian World Cup forward

Scarlets have announced the signing of Fijian World Cup lock Tevita Ratuva, bringing their contingent in Japan up to 15 players.

The 6ft 6in forward came off the bench at half-time during Fiji’s pool defeat to Australia on Saturday to win his fourth Test cap and has been selected to start in Wednesday’s clash with Uruguay.

The 24-year-old joins the Scarlets after a season in France with Bordeaux-Begles. He had previously played for Brisbane in Australia’s National Rugby Championship.

Popularly known as ‘Tex’, Ratuva is a towering, athletic presence who has been likened to Fijian star Leone Nakarawa.

He made his first international appearance against the New Zealand Maori in July and featured in the Pacific Nations Cup matches against Canada, Samoa and Tonga. Ratuva will link up with the Scarlets once Fiji’s World Cup campaign is over.

Scarlets head coach Brad Mooar said: “We are looking forward to welcoming Tex to the Scarlets family following the RWC. He’s a big physical player on both sides of the ball with a bit of X-factor. He is a really exciting signing for us.”

Commenting on his move to West Wales, Ratuva said: “I’m really looking forward to playing for the Scarlets. It is a proud club with passionate supporters. I’m excited by the opportunity to help the club push for trophies in the PRO14 and in Europe over the next couple of seasons.”

There are currently 11 Scarlets in Wales’ squad at the World Cup. As well as Ratuva, the region are also represented by Sam Lousi (Tonga), Kieron Fonotia (Samoa) and Blade Thomson (Scotland).

It’s a good question, it’s pretty tight with two good players at Canterbury and forgotten Fakatava is a decent player as you say. Not that Ratima is bad either, just felt he struggled against the best packs. Perhaps it was a confidence thing. We might have a revolving door for Cam’s back-up for a while.

If you can’t see the argument you’re not looking hard enough I reckon! Penaud and LBB are great finishers but don’t have the same skillset as Kolbe - who, apart from having blistering pace and famous stepping ability can also play at 10 or 15 (or 9 at a push); kicks at goal; kicks dropgoals from the halfway line and bumps off locks. There’s an argument that he’s not just the best wing in the world but perhaps the best player in the world (I’m sure Dupont fans would disagree).


To be honest I would pick James Lowe ahead of Penaud and LBB given his power, kicking ability and rugby intellect which are all superior to the French wings.


You’re welcome to pick Ramos above Will Jordan, but I don’t think many coaches in the world would. If you have another goalkicker in the team Ramos’s value drops dramatically.

I’m sure he’s taken it on board, and I’ll bet you’re right, Ratima will make the first squad. He’s got plenty to prove though. Super rugby behind a good pack is a lot different to test rugby against northern based players who excel and making life a misery for 9s.

Cards are not accidents, they are the result of pressure exerted. The ABs could not handle that pressure, and something [more than one thing] broke.


If you take away the GKing, I would take at least four other FBs ahead of Ramos right now. Even Buros from UBB is better.

Yeah, joking aside it should be blown by specialists. Or at the very least get all test ref’s up to speed by speaking to a few ex-props.


I think it should be a separate 30 second scrum clock. Don’t stop the game clock.

30 seconds to set, engage, throw it in and get it out. No re-sets. One shot.


You don’t want props to feel left out and you don’t want it to go the way of rugby league, scrums are no longer useful if they can’t be ref’d properly.

Hee hee, yeah he is the heaviest lock around, but honestly the best is an absolute stretch. RG Snyman isn’t alot lighter and offers way more athleticism. There are actually quite a few powerful locks that offer more than the slower than treacle Skelton, hence why he never really makes much impact vs the top tier test teams
